How to secure a forwarded port?

I have set port forwarding on my wrt54g router and have tested that I can access it through the web, but is there any way that I can secure this port so that it is password protected?

Thanks

The password protection needs to be on what ever is receiving the port, so if its port 80 the pages you serve need to present an authorisation prompt.

GeoffW - Thanks for your response, but can you put it into "newbie" speak, please.

I think what Geoff is saying is that any such protection or authentication would have to be the responsibility of the application using the port and not the network service port itself.

EssDee - Thanks for the clarification (& GeoffW for the initial post). I have managed to set a username and password now, so everything's sorted
