Half speed with wired router connected
Just had 10mg installed.
With modem connected direct to PC I get d/l speeds of 9600kbps. I'm pleased with that! However, when I put my Belkin wired F5D5230-4 router in place I'm getting d/l speeds of approx 4600kbps. If I reconnect the modem direct to the PC I'm back to 9600kbps Any ideas on how to rectify this? |
Re: Half speed with wired router connected
Yep, you probably need a new router, the WAN port on your current one is probably only a 10MBit Half-Duplex, and for general use, including the Overheads of the TCP/IP/etc/blah/blah protocols, 4-6MBit is about right.

Re: Half speed with wired router connected
Sorry to be really thick, but with the spec listed below that seems to suggest the router will run at full duplex shouldn't I get the full monty??

Re: Half speed with wired router connected
Hi fox i had that belkin router and i binned it and bought an edimax br6104k and my internet has improved a lot. That belkin router is an old one as i understand it and not very suited for these modern times. I still have problems with the internet dropping out but not sure if thats the routers fault or VM and being a complete networking newbie is not helping. I would say buy a new router and you should see an improvement. If some kind knowledgable person on these forums knows of a guide to fully explain routers, their settings and stuff in nice laymen terms i know i would greatly appreciate it :D.

Linksys WRT54GS_UK here I come. |
Re: Half speed with wired router connected
10Base-T Ethernet (WAN) part of the spec is the issue here on the WAN port this means the router is only capable of a maximum of 10Mbits full duplex.
You need to look out for 100baseTX which is capable of the full 100Mbits - make sure you set the WAN port to the correct speed / duplex though and that it matches on the modem it's self else its all fun and games! Collisions / Jabber anyone?! :D |
