which router

Can someone please recommend a router to share virgin media cable Internet connection between XP desktop using Ethernet and wireless centrino laptop running vista? . It must be able to handle bittorrent properly .

I use a Linksys which has no problems. Bittorrent works fine with it. You can get it cheep from PC world or Currys.

Yep, the Linksys WRT54G range is a good choice. Check the firmware version, as there used to be a bug with the early firmware that wouldn't track IP connections correctly. By default, it would keep track of connections for 5 days. For bit torrent users this is a problem because of the high number of connections you get, which overwhelms the router and causes it to hang (whilst it's waiting for the 5 day limit to expire so it can free up the conncetions). The only way around it was to reboot the router when the limit was exceeded.

Another vote for the Linksys here. Never had a problem with them.

Personally I would suggest the GS model in PC world.

Order it online, and collect in store on the same day to save the ££Ã ¡Ãƒâ€šÃ‚£'s ;)

Depends if you're interested in modifying the firmware on the router, or if you'll just be happy with it working straight outta the box. The GL model has more flash memory, which can be used to install 3rd party firmware.

If this doesn't interest you in the slightest, then go for the GS model.

Re: which router

Would the extra memory mean that the GL could handle more simultaneous connections than the GS? What are the disadvantages of the GL over the GS?

Re: which router

No, the extra memory is used for the firmware, so the more memory available, the larger the firmware can be and therefore the more features it can offer.

The disadvantage of the GL over the GS is that it doesn't natively include the Speedbooster functionality. However, with the GL version, you can include a 3rd party firmware such as dd-wrt, and this has an equivalent of SpeedBooster, called Afterburner.

I've got the Dlink DGL-4300 which does pretty well in the router roundup at smallnetbuilder:

It's never locked up once, despite being thrashed with BT, ed2k and binaries all at once. Smashing bit of kit IMO.

Sorry for bringing up this slightly older thread but I've been reading through posts trying to find a router thats best recommended. SnoopZ, Gareth and others seem to recommend the Linksys WRT54G range so I decided to buy the
WRT54GL model. It was a bit cheaper and as most computers will be connected using ethernet, I wasn't too bothered about the Speedbooster technology.

But I am curious about Afterburner. To make use of this does each computer on the network still need to be using a Speedbooster adaptor? Or what if 2 computers were connected via ethernet and only the laptop through a Speedbooster adaptor? Thanks again for everyones help, I'm not exactly a pro when it comes to networking :)

Because they are linux based and can run better firmware than Linksys supply - such as DD-WRT
