Location of Kit
 

I am looking at relocating my router and switches that I have to one place, in a small cabinet in my garage. There will be a firewall, modem and switch in a small cabinet mounted on the wall with a telephone socket and networks sockets/patch panel in it so that 1 I can plug the ADSL modem in and secondly connect to the rest of my network.

Will it be ok located in the garage, this is attached to the house and is all dry and secure although it does get that bit colder in there during the winter.

Can anybody see any issues against this as I plan to get the cabinet on the wall tomorrow and then arrange for my friend who is a ex BT engineer to come and put me a socket in.

well i wouldnt see a problem with it as long as there no condensation issues there, easy access incase of problems ect,
also how cold are we talking about during winter?

Access isnt a problem in there, I dont think we have had any condensation issuses in there before.

In the winter it gets to about as cold as outside so its about the same temperature as a well air conditioned server room I would guess.

Cold will be a plus point, cooling down all your kit.

You can now get dsl/phone sockets which cut down on the hardware you need.

I think he means, if you have something like a central splitter, it cuts down the need to have several filters if you are wanting ADSL in different locations in the house.

Modified filtered NTE5 faceplate, exactly the same as the ones BT use (made by Pressac), but with extra IDC terminals, providing connections for an unfiltered (ADSL) extension to be hardwired to the back, as well as a filtered (phone) extension.

Normal = Socket - filter - modem

Every single time you add a connection your connection drops a little and gets noisier.

Socket - Modem

Less hardware involved, less connections, = less noise + better signal.

I had looked into that and have got a faceplate that needs installing some where but havent got around to doing it yet.

As with locating the stuff in the garage should it be ok?

I considered it myself some time ago, but I'd probably bugger the job up if I did it myself lol.

My line stats are pretty good anyway, and I live 800m from the exchange (straight line distance), so I'm not sure what, if any, improvements I would see.
