Wireless Router - Heeelp!

Hi all. A Virgin engineer recently turned up to install a new connection for my PC in an upstairs room. Instead of running ethernet cable round the house he suggested buying a wireless router which I did - a D-Link DI-524, which refuses to work. I thought there may be a problem with my modem but this works fine when I connect directly to the ethernet cable on the main connection downstairs. Correct me if i'm wrong, the whole point of a wireless router is the fact that I don't need to connect the modem to the ethernet cable downstairs, I just connect my pc to the router with an ethernet cable, then the router to the modem via the wan port using another ethernet cable. I have called the premium rate D-Link technical line, all they could suggest is that I need to un-install the drivers for the modem. I have no idea how to do this and Virgin say that this does not sound correct but could offer no help. Any ideas?
