TV is dying lets all pull the plug.
I did a bit of digging and found the actual cost to Virgin for Sky 1,2 and sports news.... Virgin were paying about 50p per customer but Sky wanted close to 90p per customer per months instead.
So lets break down those costs. 3 channels so 30p for 30 days viewing of each. That's 1p a day for Sky 1. Sky pay 1 million per episode of Lost. That's 12.5p per customer per episode (Sky have just over 8 million). Sky broadcast new Lost four times a month + four x 24 + four x Nip/Tuck + four x Simpsons episodes per 30 days. Using the above figures it's possible to work out that Lost costs Sky 50p per customer per month to broadcast. 24 is going to be pretty close to 50p per month to show, Nip/Tuck is around 25p and Simpsons isn't cheap either. My on the back on an envelope cost for Sky for just their 'Premium' shows is about £1.25 per month per customer without taking advertising revenue into account. Virgin say that they will be showing all seasons of Lost + other series too via Video On Demand (with no ad's) later in the year. It will be paid for by not giving Sky it's 90p per month per customer........... So lets compare that with the cost of downloading Lost via iTunes. That's $2.00 which equals about a quid at the moment - what a rip-off!!!!!!!! I'd happily pay 25p per episode for web downloads with no ads, that would be a fair price, as it is more people are going download for free instead of being at the mercy of a huge Zaibatsu Corporation. What we are witnessing is the death of TV as we know it. Channels will cease to exist in their current form within the next 20 years...... As the song goes 'Video Killed the Radio Star' well here's a new one 'The Net Killed the TV Star' :-) The internet has already held a funeral for Music CD's and TV is on life support, it's just waiting for someone to pull the plug, bring it on baby! |
