New Wireless Router
 

Hi,
We have at the mo a very old Actiontec wireless system that alows internet to the PC and 2 laptops and thats it, + its not secure!!
Am are looking to upgrade, but very confused about all the different systems out there, all we want is one that is easy to install and will allow a network between the computers.
We did go out and buy one from a High Street store (the one thats like indian food) and they guy didnt really know much buut said a Linksys one would work and then handed us a box.
The router then refused to connect to our Cable STB, and the wireless thingys (!) on the PCs also refused to connect, even when a friend of mine who works in IT with Networks etc tried, it failed!!

Any advice would be great as to which one to buy, but it does need to be fairly idiot proof!!

There are lots of recommendations for wireless routers if you do a search through the forums.

My own is a Netgear WGR614 which worked first time on following the simple instructions.

What router were you using? Maybe someone here has experience of it?

If you are using a Set Top Box, rather than cable modem, connecting your router isn't quite as simple.

You need to power everything off. Unplug any old cables from the STB to old routers or PC. Connect an ethernet between the STB and router's WAN port. Connect an ethernet between router LAN port and an ethernet on the PC. Then power up STB, let settle, router, let settle and finally PC.

Now you need to register the router on the old ntl provisioning screens. Hopefully when you try to first browse to any website you'll automatically get redirected. if not try typing start:ntl into the Internet Explorer browser. You'll need your account name and password details originally supplied to you. Make sure you select the options to add a computer to your account, rather than trying a new setup.

As for wireless routers the Linksys WRT54G or WRT54GS series are quite popular. You need to ensure any router you buy is compatible with cable systems, i.e. it does not have an inbuilt ADSL modem.

Right ok, Cheers i think i understand that, i will have to go dig out the Credit Card, and give it the yearly airing!!
