Snail pace Broadband speed.

A couple of months ago my Broadband connection was through my set top box and the speed was 500kb. When I spoke to NTL (now Virgin Media) I was told I could upgrade to 2MB for the same price, but I would need to get a modem installed (which they supplied).

Since then I find that my speed varies between 450kb to 980kb (on a good day). I have since written 3 letters (2 to NTL and one to Virgin Media) and all I keep getting is stupid letters that start off with "We'll get straight onto it...." I phoned the technical helpline (151) three times and all I get is that the computers are down in India and they can't help me. I decided to phone customer services (150) today and they gave me a better story. They advised me that the contract states that it's UP TO 2MB. So if my speed is between 450-980kb then that's what I get!

So what was the point of upgrading????

The upgrade was free, so what are you complaining about?

Also, Id check if the upgrade has actually taken place. Go to http://root:root@192.168.100.1 and look at the operation configuration for the modem.

It should show 2048000 for download and 200000 for upload if you're on 2Mbps. If it shows 1024000 and 100000 then you're still on 1Mbps and need to ring up to get it sorted.

Good advice from AbyssUnderground, they are notoriously lax in applying speed upgrades.
Also, how is the PC connected, USB or Ethernet? If USB, switch to Ethernet. See many previous posts on this subject.
Lastly, how are you checking the speed? I find the most reliable is at www.speedtest.net.
Hope that helps.

I tried root:root etc. and it's telling me that windows can't find it and to try a different spelling:

Enter 192.168.100.1 in to the address bar, then when prompted for username and password, enter root for both.
