USB connection on Vista
Hey all, I have 2MB broadband. I recently installed Windows Vista as my 2nd operating system. My internet works fine on XP, but when I try to install the broadband on Vista with NTL CD I get a compability error. I'm using a USB connection.
After reading a few threads with same problem, I found out that it will work fine if I use ethernet connection. The reason I'm using USB is because I have 1 ethernet card on 2 of my computers. 1st computer is connected to modem via USB and ethernet card is used for connecting my 1st PC to my 2nd PC in order to share the connection. Some people said that new drivers are supposed to be released soon, which will make connection work on Vista via USB. Can someone tell me if they have already been released or if not, when are they going to be released? Also is there any other way to have an ethernet connection and share the connection on 2 computers, without buying any other hardware? |
Re: USB connection on Vista
I'd be interested in hearing about this as I might be downgrading to Vista myself at some point & am using the USB connection method.

Re: USB connection on Vista
Hardware would probably be the best route to be honest, Vista compatible drivers may not be immediately available and unless you can make it work with the XP drivers you will have problems.
If this is true you may have to change anyway. |

Can u give me a few advices on what hardware to buy, like router, hub, switch, etc. I never used any of those so don't have a clue which one is the best for my situation... |
Re: USB connection on Vista
Just buy yourself a cheap (cable/dsl) router & a length or two of (straight, not crossover) ethernet cable.
To set the connection up via the router. turn the power off to the pc & modem, then connectthe ethernet cables between the modem, router & pc's (modem into wan or internet port). then turn the power on to the modem & wait for teh synch & ready lights to lock. once locked turn the power on to the router. give that a minute to warm up, then boot the pc. that's it. |
Re: USB connection on Vista
I already have a router but it's still connected into the USB port, I have no room for an ethernet card inside my machine, so it looks like I'll be loosing my connection anyway whether I change to vista or not? charming!

Re: USB connection on Vista
what is taking up the PCI slots that you would plug a Nic into?

Re: USB connection on Vista
soundcard, usb 2.0 hub, which has other stuff connected to it as well as the internet & a firewire hub, I suppose I could sacrifice the firewire as I'm not using it that often but I'd have to crack open the case & swap cards every time I want to use it. Of course if VirginTL feel like supplying the parts before they switch me off I won't complain, can't see that happening though can you?
