No Home ?
 

I had V+ Box installed yesterday but the thing freezes and also when I press the Home button nothing happens

Any ideas

i don't want to get into the habit of taking time off work to wait for an engineer

Are you connecting through SCART or HDMI? If SCART, check the cable is in the TV socket (the top one) rather than the VCR socket, as the menus aren't displayed on the VCR socket.
