Help with analog box/remote

I have (found) a Ranger 9000 descrambler and a Coolbx Platinum that box work. Problem: no remotes. Lost. Will a universal remote work? I tried one tonight that didn't...any suggestions would be great. Thanks.

That box is property of Ntl - the only way to get their services is to pay for them.
