It cannot guarantee 8Mb so can you show where you saw that. ADSL and most other BB speeds are "Up To" speeds. Plust BT has the nice position of using an in-place infrastructure which for the main part was paid for by the tax payer ;)

Im not having a BT are morally better than ntl lol, who cares who paid for what, the point is BT have offered me 8meg for £10 a month for a year before going to 14.99. at the moment im paying £35 for dodgy 10meg cable????? I mean if you can't see the attraction of that,? NTL was always traditionally cheaper, but whats happeneing?

---------- Post added at 10:26 ---------- Previous post was at 10:24 ----------

Also i think everyone knows ADSL doesn't vary the speed the same as cable, as the amount of users on the network doesnt vary the speed? Are you aware of that? Thast what im getting at, either way its 8meg for 1/3 of the price

You haven't been offered 8mb, you've been offered up to 8mb, which is not even remotely close to being the same thing.

Generally many ADSL lines will test at around 5mb to 6mb, and that's if you're in a good area. Many others come in at 2mb or 3mb, or even less. Hardly any touch the actual 8mb figure.

And even if you test as capable of 6mb, there's no guarantee you're even going to get that.

How bad is your 10mb connection? If it's running at anything over 6mb, the chances are you may be better staying where you are.

hmm the speed of ADSL doesn't vary depending on how many users there are eh? have a read of this http://usertools.plus.net/tutorials/id/11

I suppose you could have a leased line- but then again that will probably cost you £100 a month + and i can't find any that are available to residential customers.

Just to clarify, it is upto 8 meg- same as virgin provide upto 10meg. In my own personal experience ADSL has been crap. The cable connections i had at 3 different houses have been much more reliable.

talking rubbish I am afraid.

1 - even in the best conditions BTs adsl is only 7.15mbit, as the rest goes in ATM overheads.
2 - It has contention like any other consumer broadband.
3 - It also has BRAS rate limiting which kicks in when synch speeds move up and down. (example, bad weather line synchs at 4meg temporarily then goes back to 8meg, this will mean 3.5mbit speeds for 3 days)
4 - the biggest and baddest of them all, line quality, only 25% of phone lines according to bt retail themselves will get a max 8meg synch the rest are too poor/long and will give lower speeds.
5 - bt broadbands unlimited tier is shaped.

yeah BT are playing the game of offering high speed for pennies which I disagree with.

What do you get for your £10? is it unlimited like cable?

Bt have adopted a one speed fits all strategy so its possible to pay a very low price for a 8mbit service but the consequence is adsl is no longer friendly to heavy users the same as cable and is becoming a light user only service for many isps. This is also why I feel shaping is very common on adsl much worse then the recent 5mbit at peak seen on cable, at least the higher speed users on cable pay more which is a much more realistic policy.

Ill See This Simply And Clear So Everyone Understands. Thy Guy Next Door Has Bt And I Installed It For Him, He Hits Just Over 8meg With His Broadband, Its Unlimited And Constant Speed Of Just Over 8meg. It Doesn't Change Or Alter The Same As Ntl, Is Also Costs £9.99 A Month And Is Unlimited - The Only Difference Was He Had To Buy His Own Modem For £14.99 At Maplin.

Ntl - 10meg £30
Bt - 8meg £10 I Meant That Difference Is Huge, It Aint Pennies?

To Make It All Worse, They Give Him 250 Minutes At Any Wifi Zone Run By Bt Or O2 Or Cloud Network For His Laptop At Internet Coffee Shops??????

Not what the Broadband website says -
BTbroadband
Option...............................Speed...D/L Limit...Setup Cost...Monthly Cost
BT Broadband - Option 1 Up To 8Mbps 5GB ............FREE....... £9.95
BT Broadband - Option 2 Up To 8Mbps 8GB ............FREE......£14.99
BT Broadband - Option 3 Up To 8Mbps Unlimited..... FREE..... £22.99

And in each case, that price is only for the first 6 months, and only if you sign an 18month contract - if you take a 12 month contract, it is £12.99 for the first six months.

With BT option 1, you can do this (their site)
With Option 1's 5GB monthly usage guideline you could, for example:
  • Download 25 music tracks per week
  • Watch 10 minutes of video/ trailers per week
  • Download 3 movie per month
Woo Hoo!!!!!

Re: Bt Is Cheaper!!! Why Is Ntl Expensive Now?

First off, ntl upload speed is NOT 384K, the upload speed is 512K (Possibly soon to be 1Mbps)

BT Broadband Option 3 is unlimited & Up To 8Mbps - the fact is you WONT recieve this speed unless the local exchange is on your butt, also you need to pay an extra £11 for line rental.

So these are the real prices (After all the offers expire)

BT:

Option 1: Up To 8Mbps £28.99 with 5GB Usage
Option 2: Up To 8Mbps £33.99 with 8GB Usage
Option 3: Up To 8Mbps £37.99 with Unlimited Usage

Virgin Media (ntl):

Option 1: 2Mbps £18 Unlimited usage
Option 2: 4Mbps £25 Unlimited usage
Option 3: 10Mbps £35 Unlimited usage

I don't know about you, but i'd rather go with ntl then BT.
