Virgin Media prices for Cable/ADSL Broadband

Cable Broadband from Virgin Media 4mb is £25.00
ASDL Broadband from Virgin Media 8mb is £17.99

Is it just me or does anyone else think WTF is going on.

I know you usually dont get the full speed from ADSL usually half but I would be cheaper getting ADSL.

I'm surprised that the price difference is so high too. :(

I'm going to stick with cable for the time being though.

I agree, as a direct comparison that does suck.

Only 2 comments.

1) With the packages being done, wouldn't it bottom out slightly lower than £25? Obviously thats only assuming you had a package.

2) I don't think we are a million miles off an upgrade in speed, and that might have been factored in, rather than creating a new pricing structure for a few months.

The other factor is that the ADSL broadband has to remain competitive with the ADSL market - which means they need to take the BT line in to consideration. Admittedly it does mean that unless something happens you would be better with a BT line and Virgin ADSL giving Virgin just £17.99 revenue compared to a Virgin phone line and Virgin broadband (hence the 2 for £20 I guess although that's only 2 meg)

just to correct these prices slightly

adsl bbi from virgin £17.99 but add £11 for line rental = £28.99
4mb solo = £25 through VM cable or with a telephone line a bundle that is available to EVERYBODY would = £27 and include free weekend calls to landlines

Getting 8mb our of ADSL is like getting blood out of a stone....

Virgin can offer me 10mb (my neibour says thats pretty much what he gets all the time) over cable. They may say they can do 8mb over ADSL, but i know for a fact i can only get 512Kb over ADSL.

The point is the Upto speeds, Cable is much more realistic.

So much for it being supposedly cheaper all-round to have a mix of their services, don't suppose you can get ASDL if you already have their TV service.

I had the cable TV before they installed my broadband so they never gave me a choice.

Look at the fine print for the ADSL, is it unlimited?

They do now appear to be advertising them as unlimited (* subject to AUP) in the same way that they do with cable. (Link)

You can also get free 01/02 calls and up to 8Mb unlimited broadband (ADSL) for £19.99.

Wait for new prices to fly out the door. Due to an ISP called Be*

They are pushing 24meg Downstreams and 1.3meg upstreams, unlimited, for 24 quid a month.

ADSL though (but they have a wide coverage)

www.bethere.co.uk for more info.

Yeh, wide coverage does not mean all get get 24Mb down, you'd have to be within 2K of the exchange for that, assuming they can upgrade your local exchange as part of the LLU.
