DVD play back problem

Ok, first off, I've stuck it here because I think it's a computer / IT problem and not entertainment.

I have a :erm: collection of films on DVD, some are burnt as DVD film and some are burnt as data DVD's to get 6 films on one DVD. I gave some to the brother in law to take away to work ( 2 weeks on, 2 weeks off ) he got home to say that his laptop wouldn't play my disks and sometimes not even store bought disks

I have tried the disks in my desktop pc, and sure enough, sometimes the drive / pc doesn't pick up the disk, and sometimes it does, I can't put any specific on the order in which they will or won't play, seems random but I'm betting it's not.

SOOooooooooooo, you clever lot, any ideas, JT, sorry but I don't think it's a lens cleaning issue now that it does the same on my pc

Over to you lot :tu:

Is it possible there are scratches/finger prints etc on disks causing random errors? DVD's I take to work and leave lying around get damaged fast.

Another thing to try is burning the disks at a much slower speed, full speed burns on cheap media can make copies that act this way too.

How old are the discs? It seems certain makes of DVDRs (Ritek) only last for about 6 months before becoming unreadable......

Disks are in good condition, as for burning at a lower speed, I don't think it's that as they work perfect, when the drive picks them up.

The disks are only 3 weeks old.

IMO, this is nothing to do with the disks but maybe the way they were burnt software wise  Although I'm burning them the way I have for years

With Nero :dunce:

EDIT: and also, like I said in post 1, sometimes when this problem happens even store bought DVD's won't play, is it possible that somethings being altered as in region, I don't know, wild guesss
