probably stupid question but please help
 

hi im new to this forum it looks like a great place to learn

anyways i have router located on my main floor of my house and i want to get a wired connection to the top of my house is there a way of doing this without destryoing my whole house and making comlicated wiring beacuse i am a noob at this stuff

If you cannot easily run an ethernet cable you'll have two alternatives.
1) Wireless (either add a wireless access point to your existing router and wirless card to your remote computer, or replace the router with a wireless version (most still have wired ports as well for your existing PCs), and wireless card for your PC.
2) Network via the power wiring circuits: Homeplug. There is a thread on it here: http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/sh...ad.php?t=35314

i have wireless right now not impressed with the 10mps connectoin

but how does this homeplug work just plug it into my wallsocket and run ethernet from there to my pc and that is it? how does it connect to the router and such ?

ok well after 30 mins of reasearching i kind of get how these works my isp offers 100mps max connection speed so i would have to buy 2 homeplugs at 100mbps and plug one directly to the router and then place another in my room and an ethernet cable from the homeplug to pc and this would provide me a 100mps connection ?


also using this method will i be able to share a printer pluged into the router and share files (workgroups and such) with other pc around the house (some are using wireless ie my laptop)

By 100mps i take it you mean 10meg broadband, if so any modern router should do atleast 54meg wireless :shrug:

i ment 100mbps typo, so i dont actually get 100mbps connection ??

Click on the speed test in the nav bar at the top of the page (you will have to allow popups from this site after you click) i bet you get between 5 an 9 mbps not 100.
What provider are you with and what package do you pay for ??

speed test says that I do not appear to be on an ntl Connection
ur right tho im only gettin 10 using xp since im on wireless but when i plug my ethernet in i get 100mbps but my pc is now in my room and i cant get ethernet cables up in here cuz its on the second floor also i cant move the router beacuse my family uses the wireless and its in a central location moving it in my room drops there connection

100mbps is the speed of the network card not the broadband speed, also you clicked on connection at the top of the page and not speed test.
If you have a wireless router allready then Spending money on homeplugs etc, will not solve your problem.
My speed test result is this
Which is very fast for a home connection on NTL
What isp are you with and what speed do you pay for?

How far away is the router from your pc ?

well im not 2 happy with the wireleess since im only gettin 11mbps and i am a heavy downloader and gamer so its not good i would benifet alot more from wired

yes i am from canada my router is right under neat me id say about 20 feet below me

Canada, this forum is based in the United Kingdom, so some of our solutions may be a bit different.

Your downloading speed from the internet will generally be governed by your internet service speeds, and the server connections. For most peopel a wireless using 808.11g speeds will vastly exceed the internet speed and is thus more than adequate. Yes 808.11b speeds at only 11Mbps is a bit limiting, since wireless may well not achieve the full speed due to distance and interference.

Of course, if you are mainly concerned about speed of transfer of data within your own network, from PC to PC, then a wire is going to be your best bet.

yea i wanted to do wire but i have no clue how to get a wire from my main floor to upstars without tearing down drywall and without running it acroos the floor makking it looks stupid
