Advice Help Needed!
Hi,
I've been following the discussions re upgrading etc. and just before Christmas went for the Asrock Dual 775 with a E6600, carried on using my DDR Ram and AGP GEforce and after a bit of work got it running fine. In the past week or so i started to notice a problem. If the PC went into Hibernate/power save The PC would reboot without a reset of the Bios. then it started to shutdown when I was encoding DIVX to DVD files. Decided today to upgrade to the latest Bios (this may have made matters worse!) as I now cant get beyond the Load defaults screen in the bootup. I've once managed to get it to the Load XP screen but then it shut down again. Wondering what the hell it could be. Any idea/clues/shamanic/diety prayers i should use? All gratefully recieved! |
Re: Advice Help Needed!
I'd suggest trying some new RAM.

Re: Advice Help Needed!
In the Bios have you tried disabling any power save options. Is the PC detecting the RAM timings correctly? Can you try booting into safe mode, and seeing if you can check stuff out from there, i.e. current drivers and stuff.

Re: Advice Help Needed!
I've already got some DDRII Ram on order so i'll try that when it arrived Jellybaby.
Rob, I would if I could even get the PC to stay up for more than 3 seconds :D I've read about shorting on the MB and a crappy Powersupply causing this. thoughts? |
Re: Advice Help Needed!
Have you got a 'Load failsafe defaults' option in the BIOS? This should load conservative settings for memory timing etc...

Re: Advice Help Needed!
cant even get that fair cobby, When i get a screen i get a CMOS checksum invalid. If i dont press f1 or F2 to get into the bios it shutsdown, If i press either of those it shutsdown as well.. frustrating.. when will i learn that i Shouldnt try and build my own LOL

Re: Advice Help Needed!
Try clearing the CMOS with the ClearCMOS jumpers (normally near the battery), if you can't find them take the battery out for about five minutes then put it back.

Re: Advice Help Needed!
OK. I ripped the PC apart. still no joy. so unlocked the cooling fan, re-seated it and all seems ok now!
Know the DDR2 Ram will help performance when i get it. but i think i need to look for a new cooling fan, was thinking about the one that Zing recommends, but wonder following my experience today i wonder if i should add some cooling compoundf to assist. |
Re: Advice Help Needed!
If there is no cooling compound between the CPU and it's heatsink/cooling fan, you really do risk doing something nasty to your CPU.
A cooling fan that is not spinning up correctly / not plugged din / not correctly detected by the motherboard can be enough to shut down the PC, as will the CPU (or indeed other motherboard related components) reaching it's maximum temperature limits (as set by the BIOS). Some of the temperatures can be tweaked in the BIOs, or by other manufacturer's utilities, but you need to know what the safe limits are. |
Re: Advice Help Needed!
As above check your cpu and mobo temperatures either by going into the BIOS (PC Health) or more preferably using Everest Home Edition (Computer > Sensors) under windows full load.
Expect CPU temps to be around 40-50C full load or maybe you have a faulty temperature sensor ? I have one PC which I drive 24/7 were the CPU is supposedly 64C - I cant be ass'd to investigate again maybe the FAN needs reseating. |
