Traffic shaping on BT broadband.
I think bt might be traffic shaping me becuase when downloading from fileplanet i get 90 - 150kb/s lately
also slow on most other downloads as well I have a 6.5mbit line (ip profile) sync rate is 7.6mbit but can't seems hit more than about 1.5mbit/s from the big download sites during peak time Doesn't suprise me if they are im quite a heavy user. also i had a p2p download at 20kb/s then come midnight it magiclly jumped to 200kb/s + Wander if theres a good way to tell if they are shaping me or not. |
Re: Traffic shaping on BT broadband.
If they were doing traffic shaping, i don't think they'd really limit things like HTTP/FTP downloads, although i may be wrong (but I doubt it!).
As for the P2P download, well that totally depends on who you're connected to. If it was a torrent you were referring to, then someone with a good connection may have started seeding for a while. |

well considering they purchased plusnet for their shaping experties it wouldnt surpsse me, fileplanet claim not to cap their highspeed servers (and ive pulled 5.35MBit/s from a 100mbit connection @ a lan party) actually waiting to see if i get an email with regards to teh 40gb usage guideline which over the xmas period. see thinkbroadband.org theres plenty of stories of BT shaping people. Spose it could just be contention issues. |
Re: Traffic shaping on BT broadband.
Well they may well be shaping P2P stuff, but i just doubt they'd limit things like HTTP/FTP downloads.
I didn't really notice anything when i was with BT, but then, the service was so poo, i don't think i would have noticed regardless :P |

Re: Traffic shaping on BT broadband.
I've had the same experience on BT with Bittorrent jumping from around 20kB/s to over 200 at the stroke of midnight (2MB connection)

I believe some shaping hardware/software also allows control over speeds from individual sites. |

Of course they could just not like me :disturbd: |
Re: Traffic shaping on BT broadband.
BT are shaping now but I thought it was only on their new unlimited tier.

I phoned up and orderd my broadband on the day after they released the unlimited package to their existing customers, when i asked about the 40gb limit i was told don't worry its gone....... But according to something i read elsewhere it was only existing customers who got put over to unlmited. I tryed emailing broadband support first time they told me i was on bussness broadband, so i emailed them again, then the told me i was infact on option 3 with a 40gb usage limit. Id email them asking about the unlimited (which id rather have if possible) but india are usless. I don't care so much if my traffic is being shaped (as long as its not execessively shaped) but it would be nice to know for sure one way or the other. |
Re: Traffic shaping on BT broadband.
I think i found the cause, some of the files i was after where older patches for games (e.g the wow 1.12 patch needed before installing the 2.01 patch) and therefore not being as popular are only on the US mirrors.
I found using UK mirrors is usally much quicker. Also found its worth checking 3dgamers as they sometimes have the stuff on their uk server that fileplanet doesn't. |
Re: Traffic shaping on BT broadband.
Right can I have some help please...
I have been on BT yahoo broadband option 3 i believe for around 6 months. I recently got upgraded to up to 8mb, can get about 5mb. Anyway, downloading torrents has always been a problem and getting more than 40kb/s has been a real struggle. I always thought torrents were just slow, end of. But then i saw people were getting 200kb/s, so i decided to investigate, i opened ports tried different clients, different computers on my network... finally come to the conclusion its bt's fault. So, surely there must be some way around this? :( |

If the exchange VP status is red it means the pipes out are congested and they are even more likely to shape p2p traffic. http://status.zensupport.co.uk/exchanges/ < you can check there Peak time evenings 6pm - midnight you will find bittorent hevily throttled (around 20kb/s), after midnight you'll probbaly find it suddenly shoots up. |
Re: Traffic shaping on BT broadband.
Thanks for your reply...
The computer is on most of the day due to multiple users so I don't really want to be leaving my computer on through the night. So is there anyway you can get round these p2p limits? Thanks ;) BTW, I checked that site and im green. I looked at the history and the exchange status was red in mid december due to some sort of upgrade.. |
