NTL router problems

Hey all,

I recently bought an "ASUS wl-520G" router and am trying to connect it to both my computer and modem. I seem to have tried everything - everything that doesnt work :p

I've got the modem from NTL plugged into the router and my computer coming from that. The layout is as follows:-

Modem > WAN port of router > LAN port of router > computer

The router asks for the hostname, mac address and heartbeat server. I've toyed around with the both the hostname and mac address (my ntl username and mac address of the modem) and nothing seems to be happening. I've left it blank and filled it in each time i'v done everything mentioned.

I have had the computer connect to the router (i.e. pinged the router) with both ethernet and wireless but no internet connection. Also i've had the internet working with just the modem connected to the computer. All of the IP address etc are finding themselves automatically.

Also iv tried turning it on from the modem > router > computer waiting until the lights settle each time. The only thing that I can think of is that the hostname, mac address and heartbeat server are input incorrectly.

Could someone please help me with this...

Thanks in advance

:welcome: to Cable Forum :tu:

You don't normally need to enter anything into the router to enable it's connection to the cable modem, no mac addy, hostname or anything. If you've been tweaking, reset everything back to the manufacturer's default settings and in particular ensure that it can pick up the WAN (internet) connection on auto settings, which get sent to it by the modem.

Remember that you can only have one output connection from the modem at a time. Thus however you connect at present to post this must be unplugged at the modem. The modem must be powered off, and the new ethernet connection formed between the modem and router (WAN / internet port), and a second connection between router (LAN / intranet port) and PC. Only once connected should you turn on modem, let settle, then router & settle, finally PC.
