Router and Network Security
 

I have a Linksys Router rigged up to my Desktop PC, the Laptop i use downstairs and Broadband works ok.

I stumbled on the Network on the laptop and it showed 2 Wireless networks, one must be of a neigbour and that one was secure. Mine isnt, and i dont know how to make it secure.

Also since getting the router i have not been able to goto DC++ and download my Music. It wont connect me to the channels, well it does connect me to the channels as far as i can see, but when i do a search it comes up with zippo, very odd indeed. Wasnt like this pre router.

Also one last thing. If the network isnt secure, can people next door or downastairs access whats on my Desktop PC, as in files etc? If so how?

Sorry if these are silly Questions but i dont know jack about wireless networks.

Securing a wireless network is easy. And definitely necessary.


You should use WEP at a minimum, but preferably WPA (WPA-PSK).


You should be able to log onto your router, & find the security section, then enable WPA Pre-Shared Key (PSK) & choose a "key" or password. Then, when you connect to the wireless network using your laptop, you simply enter the password (& you can set it to remember it).

You could also use MAC filtering, in addition - you find the MAC address of your laptop's wireless interface, & tell the router to only allow that MAC & no others.


Other things worth doing:


Change the router's SSID from the default, if you haven't already.


Change the router's admin password, if you haven't already. If the password is still the default, someone else could log onto your router's admin & change everything.

Go to the wireless security tab and change the security mode, id recommend wpa pre shared key. You will then need to make the same change to the wireless connection on the laptop

Don't know nuffink about DC++, but port forwarding is where the incoming data needs to know where to go. Without a router, it goes to the connected PC. With a router, it needs to know WHICH PC to go to. In the router settings, there will be an option to specify, for any IP port, which PC (IP address) the data should go to. If you know which port (or ports) DC++ uses, and the IP address of the PC you want the data to go to, Bob's your Uncle.

(May not be called 'port forwarding'. On my - Belkin - router, the option is called .Virtual Servers;).

i cant walk you through it, although i have a Linksys router i dont run the Linksys firmware on it so the menus etc are different

I am confused, i am in router settings to configure the port triggering.

Its got...

Triggering Range - Start and End port

And

Forwarding Range - Start and End port

According to DC++ i can add ports from...

1024 and 65535

But i am unsure of what to add in Forward and trigger?

I also have a Linksys router. I will try my best to help.

First of all, to make sure your wireless network is encrypted, go on http://192.168.1.1 Click Wireless > Wireless Security. Mines set to WEP but you can choose what type of security you want on it. You will need that key so write it down and keep it safe.

I don't use DC++ but you need to know your computers ip address and your DC++ port for incoming connections. Once you've got these go on http://192.168.1.1 again and click Applications & Gaming. Type DC++1 in the Applications box. Put your DC++ incoming port number in both Start and End boxes. Type the end of your ip address in the box and click Enable. Save the changes and hopefully your DC++ will work.

PS You might have to shutdown your ZoneAlarm when logging onto http://192.168.1.1 I have to shutdown mine whenever I go on the router setup because it doesn't display everything properly.

Nikesh i did exactly as you said but i get nothing when i search on DC++

I used Wicked and Crazy's port of 1412 start and end but i dunno, i dont get this, why is it so FU**ING hard.
