Wireless Networking Troubles

Hi,

Laptop for Christmas, want internet access.

Basically I went out today and bought a router to fit to the main PC. It's a Netgear 54mbps.

Everything was going seemingly swimmingly until it decided that it could no longer find my internet connection. I think that I have narrowed the fault down to the fact that for whatever reason, my broadband box doesn't want to work with the Ethernet cable. I'm currently using USB to connect the box to the PC (i'll probably get shouted at here), but the router requires use of ethernet. When i've plugged all the necessary cables in, the light on the box 'ENET' will flash for a bit after the box is plugged back in again but after a while will turn itself off. Also without the USB cable connecting the PC and the broadband box, the Ethernet cable isn't interested in taking up the USB cable's job.

Will I have to somehow enable my PC (and box perhaps?) to recognise the ethernet cable, or is there a simple way round this which in my woefull computer ignorance I have missed.

:welcome: to Cable Forum :tu:

When you say broadband box can I assume this is a Cable Modem?

Are you powering off the modem, then unplugging from the modem the lead that served the USB, then plugging in the ethernet lead to the router, and only then powering up in sequence the modem then router then PC (lappy)?

Have you tried connecting the lappy direct by ethernet to the modem (remember the modem must be powered off whenever the device directly connected to it is swapped over).

Yeh sorry about that Broadband Box should be Cable Modem :erm: :erm: *embarrassed*

Again, slightly embarrassed to ask, but how do you power down the modem?

Take lead out of socket, wait 1 min, plug lead back in. Job done :)
