NTL Newsgroups

I emailed NTL with regards to allowing the DVDR news groups on their servers. I was given an email address to respond appropriately but the address returns my mail. As NTL read this, then I'll tell you what I want.
.
Giganews and companies make money by supplying full newsgroup hosting. £15 a month or so (actual figure is unimportant). If Ntl supplied their own premium service, I bet they could do it cheaper/make more profit. My reasoning is that data traffic will occur if I use an external company anyway and Ntl are footing the traffic bill!!!!

By Ntl hosting it on their own networks then internal data traffic costs are substantially reduced, and hence capable of generating higher revenue.

Giganews must pay for the traffic downloaded from their networks hence their costs. Ntl must have (i hope) a bigger network and economies of scale would dictate cheaper p/Mb of data. - Also remember with Giganews ntl will still be carrying that data as I down load from Giga!

What a good idea to make more money - charge a premium for extra newsgroups.

ps don't post replies about leaching or bad mouthing for copy right infrigement - its the IT era, data exchange, it's already happening, these services are out there, I just believe Ntl should capitalise instead of hosting the data backbone for another companies profits.

Re: NTL Newsgroups

you got no chance it would cost a fortune to implement a premium service just use giganews.Cheaper providers out there offer a lesser service so even if NTL did do this then you would be hard pushed to get the kind of quality Giganews offer. If you want good newsgroups then pay the going rate and imo Giganews is the best

BTW I gotta be one of the biggest leeches on here ;)

Re: NTL Newsgroups

So you want NTL to host a newsgroup which lets face it is just there for people to download copies of copyright material? Somehow I think not. The legal issue alone would stop them from thinking of it, I would expect that the low level of completion on the NTL newsgroup servers is for a reason.
As for you trying to dictate that people shouldn't reply if they were going to mention certain things..... never mind ;)

giganews probably make very little money from the unlimited packages, they make their money from the limited users who do not use their limit.

Re: NTL Newsgroups

your missing the point a little, other compaies can host binaries so why can't Ntl? legal - no. Of course they can. If not then why's Giga still in business? Ethical? not really but do shareholder care? No, they just want money, ye$.

And the comment about disuading copyright lovers from jumping in here - well we all know that story so just keeping the thread on topic = Ntl making money from hosting newgroups rather than the sore subject of theft/infringement or what have ya.... we all know both sides of that story, but if it make you feel happy come on down lets bloat this thread with: you bunch of pirates....no we're not...yes you are, and swiftly followed by a bit of name calling etc...blah blah blah.....No seriously I just want Ntl to read my first post as I was unable to email the right dept as I was instructed to from CS.

Re: NTL Newsgroups

Leaving aside the obvious legal implications (there's a very good reason why most big NSP's Euro servers are NOT in the UK) I'd imagine there are two main reasons NTL don't do as you suggest:

1. Most of their customers are blissfully unaware of the existence of Newsgroups, and to advertise them would only invite a too close scrutiny of their content.

2. Cost.

It takes a large amount of money to run newsgroups well, and a large dedicated expert team - and this is NTL we are talking about ;)
