Self connect kit

Some friends of ours have Telewest cable TV & phone. They now want broadband and on requesting it from Telewest, they were told that they would be sent out a kit and instructions. Does this mean that they will be connected via the STB and if so is it as good as a separate cable modem?
TIA

that should be fun lol

The splitter supplied generally is also a 3.5db attenuator which could lead to signal level issues unless you change the attenuation on the back of the STB to compensate... and presumably they don't sent you any extra attenuatorus... so potentially you could still end up calling out an engineer for a signal rebalance...

Sounds like a way to do a "hope for the best" installation system really

Plus there's also the fact that they might not want the cable modem where the telly is.
