D-link Router problems

Last month I brought a D-link wireless router and wireless card for my laptop, set it up with only the laptop running off the router. Worked perfectly, I have now brought a compaq presario with built in wifi to replace my old laptop. I can get this laptop to join the wireless network I have created but it will not connect to the internet through the router only via a cable link. In my network places it says my internet connection is enabled, but when trying to connect to the internet or sign into msn I have errors saying theres a fault with my ip address and DNS... I havent a clue what to do, as it was only by chance I got the old laptop working. Can anyone help me please?

Hi mabby :welcome: to Cable Forum.

You may want to try having a look here and try these steps on the new laptop first, see if that helps.

Re: D-link Router problems

can you log onto the router via 192.168.1.1 ? If so then you should be able to connect to the net through it (like your other wireless computer). If not then it points to an issue with the connection to the router. :)

Re: D-link Router problems

With the new laptop 'connected' wirelessly, try doing the following -
Click 'Start', 'Run', type in CMD and click OK.
This should give you a black screen with an DOS prompt.
At the prompt type

ipconfig /all
then
ping www.bbc.co.uk

Cut/paste the results here (after plugging in the Lan cable!)

Re: D-link Router problems

Whoa.

Firstly - edit your post to take out your NTL IP address (82.xx.xx.xx).

Secondly - that tells us that you are currently connected by USB to the modem as well as wireless. The Cable Modem only supports one connection at a time. eg If BOTH USB and LAN are connected only one will be working!
I would suggest -
1. Disconnect USB from Modem
2. Shutdown PC
3. power off (unplug) Cable Modem & Router
4. after 30secs power on CM (Only lan cable between modem and router should be conneted)
5. when lights settle, power on router.
6. Restart PC and connect to wireless lan.
7. Try browsing to Cableforum.

Thanks for the edits and the help, as you can probably tell I don't know much about this sort of thing.

I just tried doing what you said and still couldnt get online. :(

Re: D-link Router problems

The default gateway on the wireless connection is clearly wrong, it probably needs to be the ipaddress of your cable modem, or the same DFG as the cable modem.

Thanks, ok how do I change it?

If you're behind a router, the default gateway will be the internal address of the router, in the case it should be (prob) 192.168.0.1
Was this router new, or has it been used anywhere else before?
Can you disconnect the USB, reboot as in post 8 and then type (in a DOS window)
ipconfig /all >cf.txt
tracert www.bbc.co.uk >>cf.txt
route print >>cf.txt
Then reboot and reconnect USB and go into another DOS window and type
type cf.txt
Post the results here (This will show us the output of ipconfig whilse only connected to Wireless).

The router was new I only used it on my other laptop.
