WRT54GC Installation
Hi all,
Bought a WRT54gc Linksys new online and it arrived with a crack in the installation cd. So I tried setting up manually. Had a look at other posts so I gave it a go, Powered all down. Booted samsung stb. Waited, booted router. Waited, booted desktop pc. I connected to the router setup page ok. I left all default settings and I dont get the internet light on the router. My laptop will connect wirelessly to the router. I tried cloning mac address and doing the whole thing again -no better. When I look at status page I have no ip address showing. All cables are connected ok -even tried a spare cable. My internet works fine straight through the pc. Any ideas? Cheers, Iain Ntl Broadband 4mb - WRT54GC:erm: |
Re: WRT54GC Installation
Try booting the STB then the router.
Boot your pc and open a browser. In the address bar type start.ntl (It used to work for me on a pace box) You will need your details from the welcome letter pid etc.. HTH *Make sure you have no proxies set in your browser. **If start.ntl does not work try.. https://autoreg.autoregister.net/start.html |
Re: WRT54GC Installation
Thanks for the suggestion.
I just tried it but couldn't connect to ntl page. I have disabled zone alarm too. Is there any point in contacting ntl - can they do anything at their end? Cheers, Iain |

I think the STB's only broadcast for a few mins. |
Re: WRT54GC Installation
You need to either
1. Clone the mac address of the PC thatr used to connect into the STB onto the router or 2. Deregister the MAC address of the PC in the STB and register the MAC addresss of the router instead |
Re: WRT54GC Installation
Hi,
I have tried waiting different times. As soon as the flashing led on stb goes out i boot router then pc. Also I have waited several mins in between with no luck. How do I deregister the mac address. From typing start.ntl? When I do this I cant seem to get to the screen that lets you add or delete a pc. It just asks if I want to register or reinstall then asks for serial number from welcome pack - which I dont have- only got my PID and password. Thanks, iain ---------- Post added at 19:34 ---------- Previous post was at 18:57 ---------- Spoke to linksys techical support. They said use a hub or change it for the wrt54gs version. Said it may be a compatability issue with modem. Hmm not sure about that - any ideas. Cheers, Iain |

Re: WRT54GC Installation
Still having trouble here.
If I reboot and try to register / deregister new mac address through router I cant get to the https://autoreg.autoregister.net/start.html or start.ntl The page wont display. If I connect stb direct to pc then I can get to https://autoreg.autoregister.net/start.html. Only problem is its says I'm already registered and offers to reinstall software then says not suitable for stb users or something along those lines. I cant get to the screen to add or remove a computer from ntl. I only registered my laptop on there a week ago so I know what it looks like. This router refuses to link up with my stb. Linksys guy got me to connect my cable to input of router and back to port 3 to test throughput of router and its fine. Iain |
Re: WRT54GC Installation
Clone your laptop mac address then as said above.
Just out of curiosity, i have a cross over adapter on my stb to make my straight through cable cross over :p:. Do you have one on yours? |
Re: WRT54GC Installation
Ok, Tried countless times - cloning mac addresses - numerous reboots - resets , etc.
Spoke to ntl BB tech who was very helpful , they ran through the setup procedure with me and then confirmed that the line was fine to my stb but they could not get a signal between stb and router. There has never been a lit internet light on this router - not even a flicker. I think its faulty so will get another one. Thanks for all your help and suggestions. :p: Iain |
