TIP for those suffering slow/dead http browsing
the default transparent proxy I was using was causing slow browsing issues and very frequent timeouts to certain sites; or sometimes every site, complete deadness.
so I changed my proxy in firefox to "cdif-cache-2.server.ntli.net:8080" and bang, instant browsing no problem. I switch proxy off, reload the same site and it timed out :D So after going through a few things trying to find out why my connection was so crap, I cant believe its down the default cache I am using. I know I am stating the obvious and people probably know about this, but hopes this helps for time being. you can find ntl proxies to use here: http://homepage.ntlworld.com/robin.d...cache.html#ntl |

Copy a few to a text file and try as many as you like, if you hit a slow one then change it until you find one that works best for you. There is no concrete rule as to which proxy will work best for you if the local one is thrashed.

ik p.s. I think you can theoretically use any proxy on the NTL list |
Re: TIP for those suffering slow/dead http browsing
yeh you can use any proxy on the list.
Im in swansea and use the cardiff one, but they both have their problems tbh. |
Re: TIP for those suffering slow/dead http browsing
Your better off using the one that is geographically closest to you, as using the Swansea proxies my traffic is pretty much direct, but using the Cardiff proxies, as had to recently due to various issues with the Swansea proxies, it basically meant that all my http traffic was going Swansea > Birmingham > Cardiff > Birmingham/Winnersh and then via the internet. Hardly the best option but certainly the quickest at the time...

Marvelous!
Just tried this and my browsing is a lot lot quicker, was full of time outs before but now spot on! Thanks for the tips! |
Re: TIP for those suffering slow/dead http browsing
i have no idea what a proxy is, let alone how tho change it. but had some painfully slow browsing at times. is there an idiot guide on the forum? (as opposed to a guide to idiots!) :)

Re: TIP for those suffering slow/dead http browsing
I'm in Bexley (south London) and am stuck on the Bromley proxies (which are always rubbish). I tend to switch to Brentford or Ashford proxies and it speeds up dramatically. Although the other day I noticed that Bromley-5 was quick (actuall 10mb! Woo! who'd have thought it?)
I honestly can't understand why ntl can't invest in a network where proxies arn't needed. Buy some bandwidth ya tight buggers! I've just upgraded our work internet connection from 2mb leased line to 100mb leased line. Takes 4 months to install though :( |
Re: TIP for those suffering slow/dead http browsing
Basically registered to say thanks, had problems the last 2 days (Surrey) with what I guess to be DNS/reverse DNS problems. ie pinging www.bbc.co.uk taking ages to initially find then ping is OK while pinging by IP address is instant.
Changed proxy as per OP, everything is hunky dory. Thanks JoeBloggs |

Re: TIP for those suffering slow/dead http browsing
You guys do know that we've had articles on this for years?
http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/forumdisplay.php?f=97 Edit: One thing to bear in mind when posting to say that this proxy is fast, or that proxy is fast is that if too many people use the proxy you recommend, it won't be fast anymore. |
