Suggestions for free html editor?
Hi,
Do you have any suggestions for a HTML editor to create a simple website? Nothing rocket science, as I'm just planning on using the space NTL give me to host it. I'm also not planning on spending any money on this project, so legitimately free is what I'm after. I've seen Microsoft offering a free beta of their new tool, Expression Web, but don't know what else hits the price mark, and is any good. Thanks for any ideas, Mark |

If you can create a nice looking web site in notepad your probably then ready to move up to expressions or dreamweaver. |

I do not like notepad. (or textedit). I miss syntax highlighting and line numbers (as well as a couple of other neat features).

Re: Suggestions for free html editor?
Microsoft offer Visual Web Developer Express 2005 for free. Aimed primarily at ASPX (which NTL's webspace does not support), but it can be used to create HTML pages: an uploader is built in too. A bit of a learning curve but comes with plenty of Help and support. Needs .NET Framework also.

Re: Suggestions for free html editor?
.net is a bit overkill for simple HTML pages. Although if you wanted to get advanced ASP.net is AWESOME! I prefere PHP due to the fact I can get cheaper servers and install the client on my mac.
I would recommend a simple text editor that has a uploader and syntax highlighting. |
Re: Suggestions for free html editor?
A couple of choices:
1. NVU - The standalone implementation of Mozilla composer (or use Composer in "Seamonkey" old-style Mozillasuite build). 2. Webplus - if you couldn't care less what HTML looks like. Serif have also been criticized for an update/offer check component that got them kicked out of the "pricelessware" list where there is zero tolerance of adware-type behaviour. It is also said to be difficult to get off their contact list, though some of their offers do turn out to be worth having (I prefer "minus-1" versions, dirt cheap, to discounts on current releases that will probably be on a clearance by the time I get round to giving them some serious attention). |

I use Crimson Editor -- free, with syntax highlighting, line numbering, and FTP upload tool.
AND it has a cute desktop shortcut icon: http://img214.imageshack.us/img214/3535/icondq2.gif Aww! ;) |
