moving broadband cable
Any help appreciated, as I'm technically enept at all stuff electrical!
I want to move my telewest cable, but in order to do this I need to take the metal screw head off the cable in order to push it through the wall. Does the electricity need to be off? Cheers |
Re: moving broadband cable
Hi :welcome:
are you sure it is a screw-on connector? It's just I'm fairly sure NTL use crimped ones, but I don't know if that is the case with Telewest? Is it not possible to drill the hole large enough to pass the connector through & 'make good' afterwards? - but to answer your actual question, no, the house electric doesnt need to be switched off, just whatever modem/stb the cable connects to. :) |
Re: moving broadband cable
Thanks.
Hole can't be made bigger. It's too big a job, would need about a 2 foot long drill, old house. It looks like a bolt needs to be unscrewed before the cable can be taken out the modem? |
Re: moving broadband cable
Hang on are you trying to take the cable off at the modem end?

Re: moving broadband cable
The little metal bit on the end of the coaxial cable which screws onto the modem is know as a "PPC EX6 4904" connector. I'm not sure if there's a simple name for it. It can be unscrewed from the modem but you cannot physically remove it from the cable as it has been stated above that the connector is crimped. As far as I know you would actually have to cut the cable, feed it out through the wall and back in where ever you want it, then put another of the aformentioned connectors on and crimp it again.
I wouldn't advise inexperienced would-be electricians to do it though, and Telewest certainly don't condone it. If you know any electricians who have said experience, it may be worth asking them. Alternatively you could go for the easier option and get a router. And in answer to your first question, no the house electricity doesn't have to be off. Whilst the coaxial cable is disconnected from the modem, it has no power source. That is of course, if you're talking about this connector: http://www.prosatellitesupply.com/images/PPC_EX6a.jpg No, you can't simply screw that off. The cable has to be cut and another connector has to be crimped onto the cable once it's in its new position. |
Re: moving broadband cable
I had similar probelm a few months back. Telewst wanted about £60 to do it, said that was too much so there dropped to £30. After a few days I phoned them and said that even paying £30 to continue to use their service was too much.
In the end they did it for free. |
