Thunderbird and OE
 

I became a Firefox convert from IE a while ago and was pleasantly surprised to find out, except for having to choose one as a default browser, that they were totally independent of each other and that I could switch from one to the other without any problems.

However, I am now thinking of using Thunderbird in place of OE and I would like to know wheter the same happy state would prevail. I'm guessing not, but could anyone enlighten me as to how they interact?

That depends on whether you want to use Imap or Pop3!

By default most OE & TBird setups use Pop3 which downloads all your mail to the local inbox which is only accessible by the application. (TBird can import the existing contents of your OE local mail folders)

Thus with a Pop3 server you will get mail in either your OE or TBird local folders and apart from inital migration ne'er the twain shall meet!

If you use IMAP (imap.ntlworld.com) you can elect to leave your mail on the server until you have decided to settle on TBird or OE.

So, as long as you can access an IMAP server, you can test both but any emails copied to your local folders can't be shared after inital setup.

yes, yes it would prevail.

I converted a long time ago, and I have not looked back.
I find it easier to understand, i can get extensions and themes for TB as i would for FF.

give it a try, if its not for you, convert back to OE.

I moved to thunderbird after being recommended it from these forums - it's great - then sat back and thought whether I needed windows at all and ended up changing that too !

Relieved to be finally Microsoft free - wooo hooo !

Its very easy. I use it and just made the switch one day to use one and not the other.

I've used the old Tbird for a good while now (1 year plus) its great...

I've used Thunderbird for a while now. Easier to use and doesnt mess up as much as Outlook used to.

TB is great. The spam controls are WAY easier than OE ever was. I've been using it for 2 years almost and I can't bring myself to use anything else. IE sux the big one - more holes than a swiss cheese and OE isn't exactly n00b friendly... changing was the best thing I ever did. Changing over wasn't a problem and I imported all my faves over from IE in FF with relative ease.
It's wonderful with FF and TB :D
