Speed problem when playing games online.
 

I have an NTL cable modem that works ok when browsing and using messengers etc. But when i try to play an online game (Guild Wars, Battlefied 2 or C&C generals) the speed seems to drop and the lag is terrible. I recently tried to download an update for Guild Wars and got a download rate of 5-20kb/s, i download torrents faster than that :S I supposedly have an 8mb connection. Can some please narrow down if this problem is with my pc, connection, area(nn3) or the games. :S thanks:)

PS. when I play games the U/S and D/S lights on my modem flash. not sure if that helps lol

i dont know what the problem is, but iv not been able to play counter strike for god knows how long for the same reason, but a lot of the time, i cant even surf the net or log into msn. are u using a stand alone modem? or is it a set top box modem? im on a stand alone, ntl are coming out on the 20th to fit a stand alone for us, they wreckon it will sort it, but we'll see.

Yeah I've got a stand alone too. I don't know whether its worth ringing tech support cause I'm thinking of changing to Sky bb in the next few months anyway, so I geuss I'll just wait and see what happens :o:

I have a ntl250 standalone, I played serious sam 2 with 10 players and crashday with 8 players which is max for 512 upload and my pings are always low at around 20 - 40 on CS:S.

Are you both in the same area?

I moved from 4MB to 2MB this morning and noticed no change in my ping times at all.

No noticeable difference in browsing the web either except the packet loss I would encounter on 4MB has gone.

well im from portsmouth, btw i just realised a mess up in my msg, i said im on a stand alone now, but im not, im getting the bb thru the set top box currently, but they are coming out on the 20th to fit a stand alone, my mate who is on a 1mb connection, gets pings of like 15, im on 4mb, and the best ping i ever get is about 20, but as my net has been absoloutly ****e for god knows how long, i rarley get to play.
