Onboard sound borked??

Hi all,

I've a month old Asus A8n32-SLi Deluxe of which I am very happy with from one thing.

If I am loading a game for something intensive the sound will stutter like a cd skipping.

Now I've updated the ac97 drivers from Asus's own website for my motherboard, this improved it but it still occurs.

Is this a problem with my tired harddrive or should I be thinking about a soundcard?

It'll be sharing RAM so if you are doing something intensive then maybe you need to look at either getting a stand alone card (which won't cost the earth) or you might need to check your settings etc to see how much RAM was available in case you were pagefiling at the time. I'd go for a separate card to be honest, less trouble in the long run.

Well I have 1gb of Dual Channel 400mhz ram, and even when scanning with adaware it skips.

I have a hunch my HD may be on it's way out but I am grabbing my dual core processor next week, then I shall have a look for a separate audio card.

Any recommendations for a good simple cheap reliable and Vista compatible one?

We had a similar problem with my wifes PC. We had to do a fresh XP install. Afterwards XP wouldn't recognise the onboard sound card I could even work out what manafacturer it was so I just bought a cheap £15 card (This one I think) we only have 2:1 speakers but it does the job fine. Im sure if you wanted slightly better quality it wouldn't cost an arm and a leg.
