Increasing the Sound of a Video Clip

I have a large video clip saved to my PC, but the sound is quite low, although the picture is superb, and the sound is good quality.

I'll be burning it to a DVD when i get my laptop next week, so i just wondered what is the best way to increase the sound without it affecting the quality?

Also, not quite the same subject, but while i'm here, does anyone know if it's possible to get rid of the banners or reduce them on the widescreen clip, or isn't that even possible?

I might have known.... ;)

Just to clarify, it's still a low volume when all volumes are turned up, including the media player, then when someone signs into MSN i get the shock of my life

If you can extract the audio from the clip and then put it back in, you can use Audacity (it's a free download) to increase the volume of the audio before you re-insert it.

first thing we need to know is what format is the video/audio clip in?, you can find that out by loading it into http://gspot.headbands.com/v26x/index.html

if its already Mpeg2 video and audio (standard CD/DVD format)then you can just so called de-mux the video and audio (split them apart), put the audio through some app to lift the volume then re-mux it back together.

Yamb can de/re-mux several types of file
http://yamb.unite-video.com/download.html

TSconverter can cut up both mpeg2 and AVC .ts(transport streams, standard saved DVB-T tv files) files plus dvr-ms files if need be.

depending on the original audio format, im not to sure what apps exist for lifting that but have a read of this doom9 link for your options once you know the original clips audio format

im not sure what you mean by this Pia, what banners and were are they on the footage?, in the black bars...

if one of the apps i mention above can cut a section of the file to show these then you could cut a small 2 minute bit out and upload it to your ntl webspace and put a link here to it perhaps.

The file is an mpeg. It's a movie.

Also, i don't want to cut out the audio and put it back in because i'm bound to make it out of sync.

The banners, i mean, probably didn't use the right word, but basically it's a widescreen movie so the black stripes top and bottom are quite thick on screen.
