hi there, i was wondering if it is possible to have more than 10 things at once listed in the portforward section of the router config thingie :)

what with verious games, and apps needing more than 1 line (steam for hl2/cs for example uses 3 sections) it didnt take long to fill up all 10 spaces in the port forward section, i cannot see anyway to make more so i have been adding and removing what i need as and when i need to.. but im getting alittle tied of doing this.. any help would be great!

i have a Linksys wireless-G router

easy option is putting your own IP in a DMZ (meaning the firewall will be open for your pc) other then that I would've expected to have more then 10 spaces for virt. servers....my belkin 1 has 30

I think the standard WRT54G fware only allows the 10 ranges, but can't you group several ports together?
Having said that, as the Doc says, why not just put this PC as a DMZ host and use a software firewall to block the few ports you don't want open.

Depends on the router... The short answer is yes as long as your router supports it.

The only 'fix' is to try grouping them. For example:

Application 1:

1800 TCP
1801 UDP

Application 2:

2100, 2101

1 rule allowing start port 1800 end point 2101 etc

Or it might be possible to add more rules using telnet to login and manually enter more OR TRY DOWNLOADING THE ROUTER CONFIG. IF IT IS IN CLEAR TEXT MODE YOU MIGHT BE ABLE TO WORK OUT HOW THEY ARE LAID OUT AND THEN ADD THEM AND UPLOAD CONFIG BACK INTO THE ROUTER.

Using DMZ is not very clever as it means your PC will be 'outside' the firewall and all service ports will be exposed...

I DO NOT recommend you do this... All fileshares will be open, etc etc... And I hate software firewalls - processor heavy imo

ok thanks for the replies, for now i will just keep adding and taking out as and when i need :)

not sure how i go about getting the config file im quite new to all this side of things.

couldnt find the info at Linksys web siite but it will be in the advanced menu.

Probably under Firmware upgrade/Router upgrade. Usually this page allows for upload and download of config/firmware files.

This is by no means a definite fix...

If you can find it, save the file to desktop (u should store a copy of your config just in case you need to revert it should something go wrong) and then try open with notepad.

If you get text you can read (but most probably not understand the meaning of) post it back here and Ill try work out what the structure shoudl be for additional port mapping.

If it's all a load of jargon ignore this method and carry on with your grouping... Oh and spank Linksys for being so stingy with their rules...

hi, thanks for the offer.. i just checked the config and it looks a bit of a mess :)


abit lower down i can see the names of the apps/games i have in the port forward section, but im guessing this is no good.

so it looks like im stuck with just the 10.

unless there is the associated TCP/UDP port range info I reckon your buggered. If it does have that in there we might be able to add but it might bugger up the config

If you post me if it does show that type of info I can have a bash but tbh I think we should call it a day... Sorry I couldnt help

replacing the linksys firmware with a GPL firmware such as DD-WRT gave me the ability to add more, tho i wouldnt suggest this procedure for the faint hearted.

I agree - openwrt is an open source Linux firmware that may fit on your router (likely considering make)

Find your router and download the right firmware and away you go... Linux flexibility/power for your router but **not for fainthearted** and will invalidate warranty.
