My scanner, a HP Scanjet 4400c, is showing signs of giving up the ghost, so I'm considering getting a new one. Are there any sites that review scanners? Alternatively, any recommendations for a scanner under £200? And, finally, has anyone any thoughts on the pros and cons of combined scanners/printers?

What sort of res do you want? I would expect the options are wide and varied but would depend on what you are going to use it for.

I'm doing it back to front, starting with the price;hence the £200 which is my absolute upper limit.

With my current scanner, I find 300dpi seems satisfactory for scanning normal size photos. Interestingly, it will go up to 600 dpi but the results seem to contain artefacts such as banding. OK, lets say the best possible scanner for use with colour photos with an upper size of 10" x 8", but generally 6 x 4 and 7 x 5.

I've got an Epson DX4000, and i love it:D

Stay away from hewlett packhard 1200 series all in one, they are a nightmare to configure and the set up requires a Zen master !!!! td:

I think you'd struggle to spend £200 on a scanner. The HP 4850 photo scanner (randomish choice) has a resolution of 4800 x 9600, and is £85 from ebuyer

As above, you don't need to spend a lot to get a high res scanner these days, we have a HP scanjet that does the job for us. Go for as high as res as you can find for under £100 and you should be fine.

Needing to spend only £100 sounds very attractive; I shall look around with that figure in mind.

Quite pleased with Tevion MD90009 ...wonder if they still have them in the back room at Aldi.

It's a rebranded Microtek, and includes a transparency unit. It's USB2, quite fast.

Only drawback, the ScanWizard 5 software has a disagreement with the driver for the Medion TFT (MD30217) monitor, though some other troubles have ben noted for that driver too.

The software also lacks a happy medium between a complex expert mode, and a simple mode that's often rather too basic
