Error 6118

1 Attachment(s)
Anyone know the answer to this one!

After months of faultless WIFI, today for some unknown reason none of my PCs can see any other one.

When I do a netview, I get Error message 6118.

All PCs are XP SP2, the network is 802.11g. SOme of them are using Zone Alarm some are not. ZA has not been a problem usually. They all see the internet OK.

Here is an attachment showing the outcome of a net view.

Re: Error 6118

Tis not your hardware looks more network netbios issue :

Check you've not turned netbios off or that the firewalls are stopping NETBIOS.
nbtstat /? may be friend also for debugging

snip

6118
System error 6118 has occurred.

The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available

Covers a multitude of sins. Could be literany anmything from incorrect WINS settings, the network cable not being plugged in, incorrect firewall configuration, or NetBIOS turned off on the adapter

Disable all the ZA's it can take upto 15 minutes for the netbios cache to proliferate

can you still access the machines without using their netbios names

ie

\\ipaddress\c$
\\ipaddress\sharename etc

eg

\\192.168.0.10\c$

All executed from the start > run prompt

What even with all the firewalls turned off and just using the ip address ?

eg from a command prompt

ping 192.168.0.3

please also check that you are pinging the right address

find your ipaddress by using

ipconfig (within the command prompt)

Re: Error 6118

All the firewalls are off now (except the router....I assume I'm safe behind that.
I do net view and I can see one other PC. There are 2 others out there somewhere!

BTW, what are Zone Alarm updates all about. Are they necessary or are they (as I suspect) just a way of keeping it in your frontal lobes and irritating you into buying the paid-for version?

here goes on IP config..... I'll just run along and try it on one PC

Oooooh progress.
When I did that, I found that the other 2 PCs can see each other....revealed by netview.

It seems we have a a lovey dovey network now. Two couples! I think one pair is on mshome the other pair is on workgroups.

Could this be the issue? What do you call these parts of the network? Can I just drag and drop them into 'workgroups' or something. Might it be as simple as that?

No just put them all on the same workgroup

my computer > properties > network name id : make sure all machines are in the same workgroup reboot

Before I do that...look at this.....all 4 pcs seem to be on view again. I didn't do anything to make this happen.....

but netview still only sees 2 of them

I would have thought that they would have to be visible to netview to show up in windows explorer

Consider looking at it as 2 seperate netbios networks mshome and workgroup....

Just slap them all into one job done.

Re: Error 6118

OK,
Shifting workgroups seems to do the trick.

Just so I know, is there a way of making workgroups see one another anyway?

Thanks folks
