Oh Dear.........Pipex.........

...........As if the name Pipex, wasn't sticking in the throats of a lot of ADSL users at the moment. Now they've done themselves proud, yet again.

Pipex 'How fast can I go' checker used for marketing

Most service providers' broadband availability/speed checkers are fairly benign and not linked to the companies' marketing activities. In the case of Bulldog the presence of a check box to opt-out of any marketing calls makes this clear. However the Pipex residential broadband site did not have any indication that a telephone number entered may be used for marketing purposes by the company.

LOL I've been waiting for this to blow up for a while, I found out by chance that they do this with numbers entered on the pipex.com website, don't ever put your number in there!

Another example of abuse by broadband companies, when is this going to end?

Nothing new. Homechoide have been doing this for months. As I found out when I checked my own home phone number (even though I am happy on NTL, I think it makes sense to look around). I checked my speed, and closed the window.

I got a call that evening from homechoice apologising for me being cut off, and would I like to talk to a sales advisor. I (quite politely, I thought) pointed out that I hadn't actually been cut off. I had closed the window myself after deciding not to order broadband from them. I also politely pointed out that I considered the sales tactic underhand, and would probably never buy anything from Homechoice as a result.

One of the problems with Pipex now is that you need to know which bit of Pipex you are buying from.

www.pipex.com
This is the "original" Pipex that did have a good reputation at one time.

www.homecall.co.uk
This is the former Homecall business originally owned by Caudwell Group (Phones4U). The broadband Pipex Homecall sells is actually Tiscali broadband resold.

www.bulldogbroadband.com
This used to be owned by Cable & Wireless, it's recently been bought by Pipex.

www.toucan.com
Another recent purchase by Pipex, this used to be owned by IDT Europe.

And how many people know that domain and hosting company www.123-reg.co.uk is a Pipex company? And of course NILDRAM.
