Plymouth BY Telewest 10Mb - Poor speeds

2 Attachment(s)
I'm on 10Mb service on cable.ubr14.newt.blueyonder.co.uk (Newton Abbot) and I've been getting cruddy service for the past week or two.

Downloads from gamfiles.blueyonder are capping at around 300 Kbps, I'm also getting shoddy browser performance and pretty poor video streaming.

When I rang up the NTL/Telewest/Blueyonder support, they were adamant there were no reported issues in my area and we went through all the tests that pretty much everyone else here has been subjected to.

I've now bypassed my Linksys router, performed 2 Vscans (1 Online, 1 Local), ran Spybot, Hijackthis and done netstats (all on 3 different Pc's). All this has resulted in me finding nothing wrong at my end (which, to be honest, I wasn't really surprised about as I run a tight ship  ).

The only out of the ordinary thing is that my tracerts to Blueyonder or Telewest seem to be timing out after 6 hops and at the same IP address. Tracerts to BBC.co.uk or google.co.uk seem to resolve fine. (see images)

I'm going to try and get hold of support again tomorrow, this time I'll give them the traceroute results and see if that gets me any further with them. Will post back when I find out more.

Would be interesting to find out if anymore folk on this UBR are getting the same results. If you are in Devon and on ubr14.newt.blueyonder.co.uk (to check your ubr, ping or traceroute your Default Gateway IP) please post your experience here.

Which part of Plymouth are you in? I'm in Beacon Park and I'm on the 10Mbit package too and I've just run a speedtest and it only hit 4.3Mbit all 3 times that I ran it. Could possibly be a problem with some equipment down here, although I'm on ubr08.newt.blueyonder.co.uk.

By the way, I've NEVER managed to get a full traceroute to telewest.co.uk or blueyonder.co.uk in my life, so you're not the only one :)

Re: Plymouth BY Telewest 10Mb - Poor speeds

Hi

Mount Gould here ... seen normally high speeds gradually slowed in recent weeks with a 9800kbps average going down to 8300kbps in speed tests.

NNTP still max's out mostly but even this has slowed on occasions to half speed or so ... has been a noticable dip in general speeds in evenings but wasnt sure if "students" comming back was a factor

Been trying set up a basic throttle / speed test database on my home from home News-Shack but as yet non have been willing to join in but if anyone wishes to ..

Speed-Throttle Database is a direct link .. thread is viewable but posting is for regged peeps only but if wish can email results for inclusion

all & any contributions would be gratefully accepted from Telewest & ntl users

I'm in the ford area of plymouth,i did a speed test and it showed rather pathetic speed's,but i accept that they never give a true reading,i get a more precise reading from the p2p world, and i can honestly say i am getting more or less top speed's all the time, max out at 1.15Mb on most swedish p2p site's,no problem's here.

Re: Plymouth BY Telewest 10Mb - Poor speeds

After cancelling a BT Broadband 8mb service, as they could not supply the speed here in Whitleigh PL5 I signed up with Telewest for the 10Mb service and have made four calls to Telewest already about poor speeds. I have been receiving blistering downloads of 1Kb per second !!! and a maximum of about 56Kb on average, occasionally it has peaked to about 900Kb. But this was when I was asked to check download speeds whilst on to the Telewest Fault reporting desk!!!
I have had my Cable modem changed from the original Webstar DPX100 to the Motorola SB5101E but the download speeds are still only about 150Kb on average.
The Broadband engineer has referred my speed problem to Networking at Telewest Broadband, so watch this space!!!

does this coincide with all the electrical storms u guys in plymouth had recently? if so, make sure you check the downstream frequencies are dandy.

Hi to all :)

This is a reply i had in the Newsgroups concerning Slow Speeds on my UBR,
as this maybe affecting all of us from the Plymouth Area.

This ticket is referencing an issue with UBR07 newt.

It has what we call Hight TX load- basically casue slow speeds to any
customer that connects to that UBR
What is needed to resolve is an addistional DWDM (Dense wavelength division
multiplexing) stream.

A definition of DWDM can be found here:

Nothing has been planned the moment. :(:(
