Dial up problem with friends PC
Hey Guys and Gals
My Friend has just moved house and is still a dial up user! :erm: Anyway, their dial up internet was working fine when they left there old house but in the new house nothing! It does not seem to work, the phone line is live and everything seems OK. Ive checked out all I can think of but its a long time since I played with dial up connections. Any ideas? Thanks! |

Re: Dial up problem with friends PC
im not sure was the internet tied to a provider and phone line? they should just be able to change it

Re: Dial up problem with friends PC
Have they changed telephone provider eg BT-----> ntl ?
Do they have any feature on the line ie call divert, voicemail etc which would give an intermittent dialtone which could mean the modem won't dial out as it doesn't recognise the dialtone? Is the modem actually dialling out successfully and failing to connect or not dialling at all ? |
Re: Dial up problem with friends PC
Was it just a plain-vanilla pay-as-you-go dial-up account? Or did they sign-up to something? If they signed-up then it could be that the ISP uses the CLID (caller ID) to determine the user, in addition to a username and password.
If they're not bothered, just sign 'em up with another ISP. Windows has a handy built-in feature to allow you to create a pay-as-you-go account with various ISPs. You dial in to Microsoft's freephone number, and it pulls all the details. There's companies such as Virgin.net, supanet, etc... - just watch out for those that are pay-as-you-go and those that are contract-based. |
