Dual Core Processor
 

I am in the market for a nice new socket 939 processor, I have about £200 to spend on it.

I am checking the Athlon64 X2 4800, this comes in at a max of my budget at Scan.

I know the fx60 is outside my financial reach, is this the best possible cpu for my money? bear in mind please I totally absoultly do NOT want to overclock just place in, use a decent thermal compound and go.

Why don't you go with a nice Intel Core 2 Duo E6600, it's cooler, faster and better than the FX-62 (AM2).

Unless you don't wanna a new mobo and memory and just an upgrade of the CPU then the X2 4800 is cool but AMD will not support it in 2007.

If you play games then stick with a single core processor as games do not use both cores and in fact are slower than single cores.

You won't need thermal compound if you buy a retail version as the heatsink that comes with the processor will have a thermal pad at the bottom. Just remember to remove the see through thing attached to it.

Go for the Intel Core 2 Duo.

Socket 939 is winding down, and so the choice is becoming limited. On a bang for buck basis Intel's Core Duo Exxxx range CPUs are better value, but that does mean chanign motherboard, whcih can have other implications for graphcis cards (is your AGP or PCIe?), and so on.

Perhaps non of you noticed i only just bought a asus a8n32-sli deluxe mobo and asked for a socket 939 cpu and what would be best.

I am aware Intel are ahead right now, and I am away Socket AM2 is newer but I am staying on Socket 939 until Quad Core is out or I see the reason to upgrade.

sorry to here u purchased an asus a8n32-sli mobo, surely u would have been beter getting a conroe mobo that are already QUAD core ready.

anyway if u are going to upgrade again when quad core come out (new mobo etc) i would just stick a x2 3800 in.

:disturbd: LOL no need to aplogise I am more than happy with what I bought, and I bought it aware of the possible upgrades.

However I did it for a few reasons.

I do plan on a entire new rig about this time next year but I tend to remain about 1year behind the time because then you lot buying the latest techonlogy can find out the bugs for me :)

Therefore sorry but your the little testers for users like me who enjoy just buying fitting and using. :tu: :disturbd:

But in a years time, in computing is a lifetime. Realistically, core duo has been out for 2 months. That's more than enough time for the bugs to have been found and shaken out.

ok here is another one of those occassions when you answer a question and are greeted with something thats makes me think why did I bother.

Waste 200 quid on a cpu for your board mate fine by me and everyone here, The E6400 and a mobo would cost the same and out perform the cpu so thats the answer to your question. Also bare in mind if you bought the right board now you woulldnt need a different one when quad comes out and and the Core 2 quadro is expected soon anyway

There is your reason to upgrade

I politely asked for advice on the best cpu for my motherboard, and am then told what i should have bought, At the time

1) I did not have enough cash to fork out for a new cpu and the rest, only enough for the new mobo and case ( old one was bashed to hell

2) I am known to prefer AMD sockets, in future if i wish to have tech advice I will find somewhere else, Zingle your a master at tech advice I respect what advice you give, but I am tried of people thinking because I ask for advice I am told what I should and should not have bought, truth is I bought this mobo for the price, and because I know I could likely get a nice X2 Dual Core AMD cpu in it and likely another 7900gt in time. I am more than suited with it with its AMD 64 3000 in it but I am after dual core as I can afford it right now.
