bandwidth throttling by ISP?
 

hi there, this is my first post so hello all.

I wonder if anyone knows if it is possible to get around bandwidth throttling by my ISP?

I use Azeurus and Soulseek for ligitimate downloads of live music videos and song files, posted by fans on various websites. My ISP has, without warning apparantly throttled my downloads from these legal services and i wonder whether i can bypass their intelligence and find a way around?

After hours of configuring port forwarding and adding rules to my firewall and router, i still can only achieve speeds of around 2-3kbps max. All my other downloads come down at 120-130kbps.

i will cancel my subscription as soon as possible, but i appear to be stuck in a contract. in the meantime, can anyone offer any advice of how to beat these thought police?

Which ISP are you using? Be aware than any such methods is likely to be against their T&Cs.

hi Russ, thanks for the quick response. i'm in the Uk and use TalkTalk.

They sold me the service as an 'unlimited' broadband, so they are in breech of their own T's&C's in my opinion.

any advice would be appreciated

Wow!! Someone from the UK!! We don't get many of you guys!! :D ;)

Seriously though, I'm sure their T&Cs state something along the lines of having a 'fair use' policy which most ISPs use as a get-out clause these days.

try enabling encryption in your client and using a high port number (about 30000 ish)

hi swoop, i tried setting the port to 50001 and i ticked the 'rc4' encryption option in azureus, but it still downloads like a zx81 on valium. thanks for the suggestion :)

do you reckon that i'm stuck with what i've got then russ? what would you do if it happened to you? it's annoying that i can legitimately download 40gb per month, but the only way to get the files i want is to use torrents or p2p's.

The ISP has decided that they don't want me to use p2p or torrents. it is wrong.

well it isnt wrong of the ISP to "refuse" you using p2p or torrents. but what you could do to get the most speed of your torrents is dont use them but use Newsgroups :) a bit faster (havent used them myself for a while) but when I used to use them I was downloading at 1.2meg a sec.

If the throttling is anything like my own isp (although I'm migrating this week) newsgroups will be throttled too.
