Hard Drive Manufacturers
Which manufacturer do you recommend for hard drives? I am looking to purchase several SATA ones to go in new systems and to replace others.
I have had several fail recently so need a good solid drive that I know can be reliable. Cheers |
Re: Hard Drive Manufacturers
I used Seagate all the time for my IDE drives, but i've never had one of their SATA models, right now i htink i have a WD, and it's working well.
To be honest it's going to depend where you get the drive from, as it may be handled badly there which leads to problems... |
Re: Hard Drive Manufacturers
My 2 SATAs are a Maxtor and Samsung, I have a IBM IDE one but i try and keep that quiet. All are OK.

Re: Hard Drive Manufacturers
I don't think there are bad HD manufacturer's out there, it's just luck of the draw, and how intensively you use the disk. What I tend to find kills and HD, is poor power supplies (voltage) and other stuff that is nothing to do with the HD itself
Western Digital Raptors at 10,000 RPM are great if you want the extra RPM that might enable you to read that file just a smidge quicker than the standard 7500 RPM SATAs. But that speed boost comes at a price, and my one, at least, is a tad rattly when working. For general use, I've had Seagate drives for years without mega issues, as well as Fujitsu, and Western Digital. |
Re: Hard Drive Manufacturers

Re: Hard Drive Manufacturers
Seagate seems to be the most recommended so far. I might get a couple of them.

Re: Hard Drive Manufacturers
had a couple of samsungs and can't fault either of them and the current one is fairly quiet

Re: Hard Drive Manufacturers
I use Maxtor but everyone seems to slag them off. I believe Seagate now own Maxtor.

Re: Hard Drive Manufacturers
Samsung seem to get good reviews. Good prices too, just bought a 400Gb PATA drive form Scan for £80. Compare that to the GVP sidecar on my Amiga 500 which came with a 52Mb drive for £350, plus £149 for a 4Mb stick of RAM...

Re: Hard Drive Manufacturers
Another vote for Seagate and Maxtor. I wouldn't touch anything else...WD, Samsung etc!
A long time ago in a galaxy far far away....I had a problem with a DeathStar... *eeeek* |
Re: Hard Drive Manufacturers
Seagate all the way.
Fast and reliable. |
Re: Hard Drive Manufacturers
