Asus laptop just shuts down...
My lad has an Asus A6VM laptop, it's only a few weeks old, it just shuts down completely without warning, then it won't switch on for a few minutes. It doesn't even have to be under any great strain to do it, I can get it to shut down just by playing a dvd for an hour! In my experience that would point to overheating, but the temp monitors at around 43 degrees which is well within the range expected.
It's already been back to the Asus people who had it less than two days and reported "no fault". Any suggestions before I ring them again.... Cheers, |

What does the event viewer say?
(start>control panel>admin tools>event viewer>system) in XP |
Re: Asus laptop just shuts down...
Does it happen equally on battery and mains power?
|
Re: Asus laptop just shuts down...
battery or mains, no difference...
checked the viewer, doesn't seem to be any entries at all at the time of shut down... The underside of the laptop seems to get very hot, not near the cpu and fan, more around the ram and wireless card area.... |
Re: Asus laptop just shuts down...
your best bet is to blow the heat away from the vents, use a external fan, the one you would use in the summer on the vents, make sure its blowing away from the vents, same goes for the cpu fan area, just have a look around the laptop to see where there are any vents, this may help if its an overheating problem.

Alternatively does the power just cut out ? |
Re: Asus laptop just shuts down...
It just shuts off completely, no errors, no warnings, as if it was on mains and you switched it off at the socket.
I checked last night and the area that "feels" hottest after a shutdown is the vented area where the ram and wireless card are, very hot indeed, trouble is it's got a warrany sticker across it, so no peeking or fiddling allowed! The cpu and hdd area are significantly cooler (and don't have warranty stickers, weird!). The odd thing is that it does it on a table just as much as sat on your lap, even though on your lap obstructs some of the vents. |
Re: Asus laptop just shuts down...
Install Everest and check temps during normal use.If these seem hot I think you have your culprit linky

Re: Asus laptop just shuts down...
I don't think its temperature related... 43c seems reasonable to me.
Try downloading a Linux Live CD and run that for a few hours, see if that shuts down. It boots into Linux without making any changes to your computer. See if its a Windows problem. |
Re: Asus laptop just shuts down...
But how was that temp measured? Might be worth checking with a different detector.Im wracking my brains now as to if ive ever known a machine to switch off because of a software issue. The only thing I can imagine with a laptop is if the powermanagement options are screwed maybe reset bios defaults and turn off all power saving in windows and run off mains to test this. Otherwise I would say its either heat or power related(motherboard most likely)

Re: Asus laptop just shuts down...
the BIOS monitor would be reporting the CPU temp, from the sounds of it it's the GPU overheating instead, make sure the laptop is on a hard surface with no obstructions near any of the vents

Re: Asus laptop just shuts down...
Ive got an Asus laptop and it comes supplied with some power gear software which changes the settings of the laptop,(shutdown/hibernation etc) realted to the way the laptop is being used.
When the laptop shuts down have you been using it for a long time or leaving it idle, or watching a dvd, as the laptop probably assumes that it isnt being use (when watching a dvd) and therefore turns off, mine did that to me once, but i'm sure it was the power settings, it does change automatically, and you can disable it, maybe give that a try? I havent had any other problems with it shutting down, the power settings do seem to take over quite frequently, so that may be a cuase. My laptop also feels pretty hot underneath, but it didnt seem unusual to me as the cpu temp is very low and stable. Not sure if it will help, but it may be wortha look if they couldnt find anything wrong with it? |
Re: Asus laptop just shuts down...
Just to update you on what happened....as I mentioned, it came back from Asus marked "no fault", I ran it for the weekend and it repeated the shutdown fault around 20times! I logged every detail and got them to take it in again. It came back last week, they'd replaced the motherboard due to an intermittent "northbridge" fault. Been ok ever since, pity they didn't check it out properly in the first place.
