Norton Internet Security 2007
Anbody got a copy of Norton Internet Security 2007 yet?
Just wondered if the claim about it being faster than the previous version holds water! Cheers Lee |

Who would want to install anything with Norton on it!
I certinally won't be seeing if its faster because Norton is banned on my systems! |

I've got Norton IS 2005 and System works and they run without too much bother. There is an issue with Creative soundcards but use the KX drivers and all is pretty good.
I need to upgrade and NIS is often rated top in the security pages (with zone alarm) and probably will go with NIS 2007. My current version doesn't noticeably slow my connection though it is a tad heavy on resources and is not as configurable as I'd like. (I'd like to make a set of rules eg popservers = pop.mail1.net:port + pop.mail2.net:port..., smtpserver = smtp.mail1.net:port...; now email read = pop at popservers, email send = smtpservers..., usenet and so on. Then I want to apply those rules to groups email client = email read + email send, news client = usenet + email send. Now apply these to applications, thunderbird = email client, xnews = news client. Now if I add a new pop server I add to the popservers group and applications now access OK, also true if I revoke.) |

It does make me laugh how whenever Microsoft or Symantec are mentioned (sorry is that supposed to be Micro$oft or $ymantec to all you anti da-man computer lot?) the die-hard computer geeks start lining up to scoff, berate the posters for daring to even think about installing such profit-ware on their PCs and then continue to list a ream of geeky alternatives that only Stephen Hawking would be able to comprehend and probablt don't work as effectively.
Yes Norton is bloaty, yes it will slow your computer down (just like every other anti-virus program) but it's also about the best consumer package for people who don't WANT to understand the alternatives becuase they do actually have a life! :D |

The real issue with Norton, is the fact that many systems get compromised with it installed - and then the AV engine is unable to remove the infection. Then if a user does change their mind, often attempting to remove it is problematic (I recently had to do it manually through the registry).
if someone is happy with Symantec, thats fine by me,but in my opinion there are better options available. Still even Norton is better than nothing. :D |

How is it inferior? Symantec always rate highly (almost at the top) of virus detection and removal and as I said, and this may be a bitter pill to swallow, most people don't want to dink around with their PCs, wouldn't know what overclocking was even if you explained it to them, wouldn't take the side off their computer, actualy switch off their machines at night, don't run their own mailserver and, most importantly, just want something as reliable as anything else which is easy to understand.
It's also the reason why Windows came pre-installed on their PCs rather than having a couple of discs with Linux. No-one's objecting to your geeky types installing something different - just objecting to your scoffing at someone who wants a program like Norton on their machine. |

Interestingly enough i had a virus on my PC last night. The virus ended my Norton subscription, turned Norton off and turned off auto updates.

Klez disables lots of AV programs, including one that the techies rate highly.

just had a breif read through the above and came to conclusion that norton is not a good program to have on pc!? unfortunatly i knew and still know very little about pc's and i've got norton 2006 installed and find that with all the Symantec things my pc seems slow for what the processor is pentium 4 3.06 ghz.

Norton is a suite, it attempts to give you protection for many areas of the PC. That is firewall, anti-virus, anti-spyware, email scanning, real-time protection.
If you choose to go down the pay-for route Kaspersky is an excellent choice: http://www.kaspersky.com/ However all the protection I use is free, although I have donated to some of the projects, here is a list of free programs for you to choose from. You will need 1 anti-virus program, 1 firewall, as many anti-spyware as you wish. Quote:
