Hmmm... Google purchasing a technology/interest they already have an involvement in? I'm surprised - they only normally purchase companies to expand into new areas (such as Keyhole/Google Earth). For them to look at YouTube when they already have Google Video is quite unusual for them.

Interesting opinion piece here

I agree with that what that article says. Youtube has no real revenue stream (I'd be staggered if the advertising they carry covers their bandwidth costs) and that's possibly the only reason they haven't been sued yet. After all, there are a *lot* of copyrighted videos on YouTube. They *are* developing a system for copyright enforcement, but if that causes the videos to not be accessible, how many users will leave?
