No 'internet' on wireless connection?, *PLEASE* Read...

I was called to someone's house yesterday and i spent hours trying to fix this problem but i just couldn't get my head around it.

Basically she wanted her internet setting up wirelessly... She is connected through a NTL:Home120 Modem (UK)

I installed her wireless pci card and connected her broadband router. I was able to instantly connect and communicate with the router so no problems there.

But there was no actual internet connection what so ever, the Internet Gateway in Network Connections was set to Disabled, whenever i try to enable it i get 'Connection failed...' the WAN light on the modem does not come on at all and neither does the ethernet light on the modem(if it should?)

I tried running the 'internet setup' from the routers web interface but when it tries to contact the remote server it says it can't make a connection. When i connect the modem straight to the mc via USB i get an active connection straight away.

I've tried changing ethernet cables and different configurations but nothing, i've also upgraded the routers firmware, but again.. had nothing.

the router is a: Buffalo YWR-G54

any help would be appreciated, she said she got the router from her old house where it worked fine, so i'm guessing it's her NTL Modem which is obviously different??

Thanks:p:

Could there be a problem with the card?

Did you turn the modem off before connecting the router?

You need to turn on in the following order:

Modem --> Router --> PC

Allow the modem & router to stabilise before turning on the next in the chain.

If that doesn't work come back, I've got the same router going through an STB & it works fine...

[Edit} - I have to ask, you haven't got ethernet & usb connections plugged in at the same time?

I think the OP mentioned that there wasn't any link light coming on on wan port to say there is any kind of connection there. If this is correct then it could be an issue with negoitiating the connection (half/full duplex, 10/100Mbits, etc) between the modem and the router.

the wireless card is fine, it communicates with the router perfectly.

yes i had shut everything down and turned it on, however i'm not sure i done it in that exact sequence, this is something i will try.

Taking a step back - does a standalone PC work connected to the CM?

edit>>>>Sorry just read you have done that.

Next thing to try would be this> In the settings of the router is the MAC address the same as the router?
Also have you got a DHCP renew button ?

yes it does work standalone with the PC however it is connected via USB, maybe the Ethernet port on the modem is dead as it doesn't light up when connected to the PC either...

Unless the ethernet cable is faulty - I understand there are 2 'types' a cross and straight through - are you using the one Ntl provided with the modem ?

Can you just clarify - you are not trying to connect both USB and Ethernet cables to the CM at the SAME time, and you do reboot (powercycle) the CM when you switch from USB to Ethernet?
