I didn't think the NTL newsgroup servers were ever alive in the first place :)

Could be something wrong with the DNS servers you are using, the path to them, or you specifiying them in windows.

Anywho, news.cable.ntlworld.com resolves to 80.5.182.99. Just substitute it instead of the host.

If you have the same problem, you can do a search from dns lookup or reverse dns, in a search engine, and resolve them yourself. Even if the server is down, the host should still resolve to an IP.

Edit: I have just tried connecting to the NTL broadband newsgroup server, works fine here.

working here - using the dns name, I find the news server is very fast, the only issue I ever have, is completion ;)

Its ok again now, thanks guys.

I've usually found it very good, but lately since the 'improved service' I've found it sometimes seems to stall a lot when retrieving posts.

On the whole pretty good though !

cheers

out of interest, Ian, do you use a browser 'add on' like outlook express or thunderbird, or a client like Agent or Xnews ?

I use both types, Outlook Express for text groups and Newsbin for Binaries, the stalling is most noticeable on Outlook Express (double clicking a posting sometimes takes a few seconds to show - its usually immediate) but I have today noticed the delay on binaries in Newsbin as well.

it must be an 'area' thing, I havn't noticed any of that - I just 'combined & decoded' a multipart file from a group on news.cable.ntlworld.com, with no problem ;)

I use Newsshark, which is very good. The interface is by far the best I have ever seen on a newsgroup prog. Only problem is that it isn't free, but you can keep using it for free with restrictions. Does me fine for what little I use it.

as ever 'each to their own' ;)

Xnews gets my vote, currently, it is 'free' but can do 'combine & decode' and lists the threads appropriately ;)
