Use of VPN Connection Telewest

Hi There,

I am considering installing Telewest's Broadband. Can anyone tell me if it Allows VPN traffic. I have a requirement to connect to my office, I would use CISCO VPN dialer software and connect to a fixed ip address at the office. About 18 months ago a colleague tried it and it did not work, Telewest at the time said they don't allow VPN traffic. In the last month I have had 1 response from Telewest saying they do support it and another saying they don't. It would appear their tech support doesn't have much understanding of VPN.

If anyone currently connects over VPN i woudl be interesated to know

cheers
Dean

:welcome: to Cable Forum :D

I don't know specifically about Telewest, but if it's anything like ntl it will be something that is not supported (in other words the ISP will not help you to solve problems), but that doesn't mean it can't be done. ntl retain a right to ask you to stop if it is affecting their network. It will depend on how intensively you use it.

Remember that Telewest have a blanket clause that the connection it to be used for residential not business purposes (assuming you are a residential user).

I have successfully set up a VPN into my office from my ntl account, using the standard M$ Windows XP VPN connection wizards. Again I don't know about the specifics of your setup, sorry.

cheers Rob,

I read that Thread earlier, it does read like the person concerned has used a VPN connection sucessfully. Telewest say there is a 30 day money back guarantee, maybe I will speak to them and ask if I can invoke that clause if it does not work.

Hi DeanW and :welcome: to CF ;)

as RobC has said, it will not be supported, but should work.

A colleague of mine uses TW BB and connects to the office using a VPN client (CISCO 3000) quite happily, and has never had any issues (aside from the server at our end being naffed up ;) ).
I use the same client on NTL with no problems..

Thanks for the replies, Below is the official repsonse from Blue Yonder Technical

support. I will give it a go and update the forum in a few weeks.

Thank you for your post to blueyonder Technical Support

There are no restrictions on using VPN connections through the blueyonder network, many people already have them set up.
There is a no quibble period for cancelling, which I believe is 14 days, although Sales would be able to clarify this when you contact them
