Tv ratings

Hiya

This has baffled me for a while, how do they know for programs how many people view them? I mean I have heard about the when adverts are on they measure the electric demand on popular programs.

But how would they know 14million people view something for example or 2million view this.?

This also goes for tv channels on cable which do not have adverts.

I don't know the ins and outs, but the basics are that they pick a few thousand houses, then give those a box which monitors what they watch and when.

The BARB (who do the research) website has more info. http://www.barb.co.uk/about.cfm?flag=about
