New NTL BB with existing wireless router??
I'm having NTL BB 1meg installed on Friday and already have a Belkin wirless router setup on my PC....main PC is hard wired via ethernet cable and I also us it via wireless to connect a laptop....the Belkin unit has a WAN connection which I know my CM/STB will plug into....what I need to know is when I run the NTL BB setup CD should I do this with the router connected or disconnect the router and plug in the CM/STB directly into the PC ethernet card?
Have been reading up on varoius forums and keep seeing this 'MAC number' registration thingy mentioned???.....I know the router I have can clone the MAC address...but am still a bit confused by it all...the router came with an 'Easy Setup' CD which I didn't use because I wasn't connecting it to the internet at the time...should I run this now??? Cheers for any help folks...would like to get things right from the start! Paul ;) |

Assuming your PCs can see the router and each other, then you will not need ANY setup CDs. First, you power off the Cable modem (unplug it). You will also need to unplug the router. Then plug in the cable modem, then the router. Finally, on your PC that is wired, go to the address mentioned in http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/sh...72&postcount=5 You also might need the serial number mentioned at the bottom of that post. |

Your belkin router should operate just fine with the ntl system (assuming it is not an integrated ADSL modem model). Just plug the router in to the cable modem (having powered everything off first) and when powered up it should all detect. It's very unlikely that you will need to run any ntl CD. That really only applies to add drivers if you are connecting a PC via USB. The MAC registration thingy is again only important where you have already connected PCs to cable, in other words you need to maintain an existing registration. The modem will pick up the new router's MAC and register with that. Should you ever change the router, you would need to allow the modem to detect a new one but again it will do that quite simply. You may need your ntl acount details and password though. Connecting via a STB is a tad more difficult, as the directly connected appliance has to be specifically registered. Normally you will get pointed at a registration screen by ntl (iff not type "start:ntl" into the browser), and if your existing network is already running your router will forward the display of that screen to your PC, for you to work through. Thread moved to Computers & IT as it relates to network connection setup. |
Re: New NTL BB with existing wireless router??
Cheers guys...thanks a huge bunch for your rapid help!
Just have to wait and see what NTL connect me through as I already have old Pace STB...the one with 'x-over cable' on the back. Cheers once again Paul ;) |
Re: New NTL BB with existing wireless router??
The Pace STBs are very much working at their limits at the 1 meg setting. Depending on your area ntl should consider either replacing it with a Samsung, or providing you with a separate Cable Modem. If you have any likelihood of increasing speeds in the future, then it makes sense to request that the Pace be upgraded. If of course (not so essential wiht a wireless router), you need your broadband in a separate room to the STB, then a separate cable modem would be useful.
