Internet sharing problem

ok i have two pcs.

PC1 has winxp media centre 2005 on it. This pc has an NTL modem connected to the ntl network via a cat5 cable. It accesses the internet fine.

I have a NIC from PC1 connected to a hub.

PC2 is running winxp pro (SP2 upgraded). This PC is connected to the hub via a NIC. PC 1 & PC2 can see each other. The shared folders can be accessed by both pc's on the other pc. Yet....... PC2 cannot access the internet!

TBH, its now getting behond a joke. Many hours of messing around, so I've come here to ask for help.

All norton firewall and antivirus software has been removed in an attempt to get this working.

Please help.

Thanks.

P.S. On a sidenote, can the hub be placed between a pc and the cable modem supplied by NTL?

Re: Internet sharing problem

So PC #1 has two network cards? one to the ntl modem, the second to a hub? The second PC connects to the hub.

Have you run the internet connection sharing wizard?

Placing a hub between the modem and PC#1 will not work properly. a hub is a dumb device that litterally allows you to joing numerous cables together. The modem will get confused as it would be asked to speak to more than one PC at once, something it cannot do directly. A router is the requirement in this location.

The hub is OK between PC#1 and PC#2, altough not really necessary if you only have two PCs on your network, a cross over cable would have sufficed.

I might go the router route, me thinks.

Re: Internet sharing problem

Start the ICW on PC#1 as that is the gateway, that should prompt you for what to do next.

If you have a lappy to connect up as well, so you are building a bt of a network, I'd definitely go the router option. It'll be easier and more reliable in the long run. There is a sticky thread on suggested routers.
