on 14 July 1995 Germany's Fraunhofer Institute chose to use the .mp3 extension for files holding audio data encoded using the MPEG standard's Audio Layer 3 specification. The MPEG Audio Layer 3 codec was standardised in 1992.
Blimey - 10 years old already! :birthday:

Ah the good old Mp3 that has attempted to kill of Cd shops many times, taken over the whole file sharing community, and given rise to Ipods, I Rivers, and all other mp3 devices.
Its certainly great and I say Happy birthday great little compressed file !

I remember those FTP sites where you had to click loads of porn banners and get lots of crap in your inbox in order to get access to the FTP. Also some had a ratio - whereby you had to upload X amount of files before you could download Z amount of files - it varied between servers.

Whilst MP3 might be ten years old, nothing beats the PCM 44100Hz wave off a CD with no compression. It's the best form of sound you can get without raiding the studio archives for the masters. In other words, I still prefer CDs. :p:
